So if we buy a Blu-Ray player and a receiver we will get 3D just because the cost difference is close to nill.

If looking at good BluRay players - give the Sony PS3 a look as well. It provides the BluRay function and lots more and the price point is not that much more.

Right now. At this very moment we can get a Sony Blu-Ray player for $130-160. The PS3's are a bit more money. We have an XBox 360 so we do not need another game machine.

But I did say right now. :D There is a chance the PS3 prices might drop. If they drop into the Blu-Ray player zone things get interesting. :D Not only because of playing Blu-Ray but for Internet video streaming.

This stuff is NOT simple.

The wifey laughs at me because I put so many things into spreadsheets. But it is the only way I can keep track of this stuff and make a comparison.

I'm not sure exactly what you're indicating here; over the air, a cable system or satellite TV. When watching HDTV, anytime there is a low definition source in the transmission, the picture could be less than ideal. By this I mean, you could have the latest HDTV fresh out of the box, but if the origin happens to be an old NTSC commercial, nothing can improve it. This is normal and very common. Many folks that are using converter boxes on an old TV, don't see any improvement today with digital. Surprisingly, there is still a lot of NTSC stuff in TV stations and loads of NTSC commercials. So you can't totally blame the TV. Granted, if you don't have 1080 resolution, you're not going to get the best picture. But again, a high percentage of HDTV is only 720. We're not out of this conversion mess yet, and soon the cable companies will have to convert to total HD.

Supposedly some sports games are also still broadcast at non HD level or at 720. The fast movement and the broadcast technology can lead to pixelization and some TV types or more prone to pixelization.

The other tid bit of information in the WSJ article was that the TV's were likely to get sold as bundles with other products.....

I just got an email from Amazon for a:
Panasonic VIERA TC-P42G25 42-Inch Plasma HDTV, Get a Free 2.1-Channel SoundBar Speaker System

The TV was $1,100 and now is $800 and you get the speaker for free. If you need those speakers. :D

So it looks like the bundles are starting to be offered.

All Viera's are not the same. The Viera plasma range seems to have at least 2 picture quality levels. The basic level includes the model range listed above. (Shiny black frame). Next up is the V series (Silver/grey frame), thats what we got and the picture is superb (Panasonic Viera TH-P42V20A Review - Plasma TVs). My point is that theres a noticable 'picture and sound quality' difference - its not just bells and whistles.

3D Viera Plasmas may arguably have an even better picture but its a big price jump. 3D tv (in small doses) really is amazing but I think its too early to go that way. The big improvements will probably be in the glasses. They seem pretty primitive and expensive at the moment. Theres also talk of 3D tv's that won't need glasses but I suspect thats pie in the sky.

Actually to better describe the low quality of the No Name LCD TV I was mentioning is the looks of a small zigzag around the images, the edge of the images were not sharp and crisp, from a distance of 8 ft could not notice this but but any closer you could start seeing this right away, look Like the hair on a razorback boar, BTW we have Direct Sat-tv

Is it most noticable during movement? Thats one of the reasons I bought a plasma this time instead of LCD.

We bought a Samsung 40" LCD and its the brightest clearest HD LCD TV I saw anywhere we went.

I didn't want to spend the extra on LED just yet they are super nice and would love to have one maybe next time.

I actually got the PS3, slightly used, off the Internet so $$$ were less than retail. Got a couple of games, the new Move Motion thing and couple of guitars, microphone and drum set for the grandkids to play with when they come over.

The other thing with PS3 is it is wireless so can connect to home network and either share or download audio / video from your computers
or do the Netflix video streaming. Output from the PS3 is HDMI so it works great with HD TV's.

I just bought a new tv last weekend. Was using my dads 62" Samsung plasma but he finally finished his house and wanted it back. I looked at the DLPs $350 for the bulb that they estimate lasts five years or 8000 hours at 4 hours a day. I have four kids and I'm home with one all day. I'd burn through that bulb in six months.

I went with the Vizio 55" LCD from Wally world for $898. Awesome picture incredible sound but my dad came over today and asked if we could trade back as his is too big for his house. :)7
