The title pretty much sums it up. My friends hired hand ran here tractor out of fuel and they can not getting it running. I need to go over and see what I can do with it.

It is an older grey market tractor. The brand escapes me at this moment.

Since it was run dry I am assuming that the system is full of air. How do I go about getting the air out of the system?

Cheers

David

bleed the injectors

First be sure to pour diesel fuel into the fuel tank and you may wish to open up the fuel filter too and pour diesel fuel into it as well.

Then on the injection pump somewhere should be a fuel clearing valve you open to allow air to be pumped out whilst the pump is being primed by turning the engine over a couple of times. Then close the fuel clearing valve again and crank it up.

If you cannot find an air clearing vlave on the pump, you can loosen up the fuel injectors about 1 turn and crank the engine until diesel fuel sprays out of the injectors (be sure to wear protective eye cover) then retighten the injectors and start the engine.

Forget the injectors and pump until last resort. If it is a Yanmar, or similar for most any other diesel , just before the sediment bowl should be a 10mm , phillips bleed screw. open it and allow air to bubble out until only fuel drains, make sure bowl is full of fuel. there is one just after the bowl, and a third at the pump, bleed in that sequence. attempt to start. If no go , repeat the process. If still no go, you are doing it wrong, but then go after the injectors.

Thanks guys.

Bleed out the injector pump and she started right up.

The tractor is a Allis Chalmers 2 cylinder diesel. Sounds very sick when is is running.

quite a few of the 2 cylinder, engines sounded sick and loud when they were running

Once I read a bit about continually feeding a man or teaching him how to fish...I would also show the hired hand how to recover, that way he can continue to do what he's been hired for. He will appreciate the lesson and you will benefit, everyone wins.
Best of luck,
Martin

If you let the hired man go thru this exercise on his own, he will likely be more dilligent in checking his fuel level. Most people don't get caught twice on this one. they don't like the aggravation.

OK, I'm a little unclear here. Is this a common issue with diesels? I have run my tractor dry several times while mowing or plowing, and all I have ever done is take a hike to the workshop and carry the 5 gallon can of fuel and a funnel back to the tractor, top it off, and start it up. It may may take a second or two longer of cranking, but it has never given me trouble.
