Did a transmission oil/filter change on a new to me M5640 (gear transmission) today. So the first time and a learning experience. No sight window just a iddy-biddy dipstick. Manual says 10.5 gallons (I realize this is for a dry transmission). I put in about 9.5. Over filled by about 2". Above the little stick and up into the stick retension/sealing gasket area. It would be so nice to have a plug at the fill line of the transmission or a least a reasonable oil/filter change gallon requirement number in the manual. The dry fill number is useless.

I guess I dribble some out of the main drain on the bottom and hope I can control the flow unless someone knows a better way which would be good.

I don't know any other way, what I would like is if they would make the UDT 2 red or some other color, when I do a change I cannot see it on the dip stick, anyone else have that problem ? it's so clear and thin its hard to see..

Apparently John Deere makes a red dye that can be added to make checking levels easier -- John Deere Lubricants - JOHN DEERE #MT3668 HYDRAULIC OIL DYE.

I lay the dip stick on a clean paper towel when measuring transmission/hydraulic levels.

I do that too but sometimes it is still hard to see, as the stick has oil on it all the way, when it works I get a bigger blob where the oil level really is. I wonder what Kubota would say about JD die in super UDT..

I keep a few of these around for overfills:

Amazon.com: Air Power America 5:cool: Topsider Multi-Purpose Fluid Removing System: Automotive

It lets you suck extra oil out through the dipstick opening.

It's a bit pricey but has many uses. There are cheaper plastic models out there but this one is made of metal and will last. I picked one up on eBay last year for $10.

Love my 2320 with the dipstick, hate my 3400 with the sight glass you have to look in a hole to see. It was OK when it was new but at 2500 hrs it's just cloudy enough you can't comfortably tell if there is oil in the sight glass or not! (the oil doesn't have 2500 hours on it it gets changed every 200 but the sight glass does LOL)

I got a $5 squeeze bulb syphon pump with a skinny hose I could stick down the dip stick hole about 3". It was slow but it syphoned to the bottom of the dip stick. From there I added 3/4 of a Quart to the full line. Now I see why I missed it. 3/4 Quart dip stick range isn't much when you are playing with 10 Gallons.

Thanks for the idea bdhsfz6

I was going to ask if you filled your filters before adding. The set up in my tractor will hold a couple of quarts at least.

I keep a small plastic container with tight lid in the barn full of baby powder.
Take out the dip stick and wipe dry.
Dip the end of the dip stick into the baby powder and tap off the excess.
Return the dip stick to the tube, pull out and get a real clear reading.
Wipe off the dip stick and you are finished.

And no this will not blow up your engine! :)
Learned this trick from a old timer back in the 1950's as a kid.

I didn't think overfill on a gear transmission was a big deal, Kubota recommended that I put in a gal or so more when I bought mine to help slow the gears down so I wouldn't have to wait over a minute to put in gear, it brought down the shift time to 7 seconds from the neutral position.

You get a good deal on that bigger tractor? much bigger and you be in the skidder size.
