I did a search on Hemaris thysbe moth Up popped this site, that is all about Hummingbird Moths and how people think they are baby Hummingbirds. Thanks for the information.
/w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif I guess with not only the wife thinking the same thing about these moths. I should take her out to dinner tonight. /w3tcompact/icons/clever.gif

Re: It\'s a BIRD?

I talked with my friend last night, and he said that it is definitely a sphinx moth, of which there are literally 100's of varieties, including the Hummingbird Moth (all part of the Sphingidae family).

The tip-off for him was the size/shape of the moth, plus the fact that it was hovering over the petunias. There are bunches of names for them (probably related to the general variety), including the ones I just mentioned, plus hook-worm moth, potato moth, clear wing moth, 13 line moth, and so on. The clear wing moth is the one most commonly called the hummingbird moth (which is not the one you photographed).
