its a New Holland TN65. the fuel guage reads empty when the tractor is off, and full when its running. no matter how much gas is in it. i dont have a correct reading. please help what could it be? im EE major and i have a feeling its a electrical problem. if someone could point me in the right direction of where to start diagnosing this problems i would be very thankful.

The wire came off the sending unit is my best guess. If not that, then the wire had been chaffed and is grounding to the frame of the machine. Easy way to find the problem is to run a test wire from the sending unit to the gauge, and if it works properly, they you know to look for a grounded wire. The fuel gauge works on the basis of resistance. The more the resistance, the more the needle moves to one end or the other. If there is no resistance, it will go to one of the extremes.

I have no idea where the fuel tank is located, but I am relatively certain that if you search with a flashlight you might just be able to see the top of the tank. I know the principles of how the systems work, but not the exact application to your particular tractor.

Very annoying /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif, isn't it! I am experiencing different but related problems with my TN90F (orchard/narrow) fuel tank/gauge. My gauge will not go above half full no matter if the filler is overflowing.

You might want to read the answers on my similar problem in this area [fuel tank phantom], the last ones of which I am going to work thru tomorrow. My tractor is in the same family as yours but it has a cab and 2 tanks in 2 different parts of the machine, not sure about the TN65--ck your owners manual.

In addition to what's been suggested (which sound like good possibilties for your specific problem), I would consider the possibility of a stuck sending unit in the tank itself (as suggested to me but prb not my solution).

I would also call your dealer's serv mgr directly. I'm going to call mine again if the recent suggestions do not work, but he already scratched out once on my problem. If it is in warranty, of course get their help or take it in.

Keep us posted (oops) and for the record be sure to tell us the solution that works,

btw--you did mean (diesel) fuel instead of gas, right? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
If not you are in for a whole 'nother set of issues!

If it is a newer TN they added an auxiliary tank above the main tank. There is no sender in the Aux tank and the fuel gauge will not come off full until the aux tank is empty and a gallon or so is drawn off the main tank. If this is not contributing to your complaint, a grounded wire to the sender or a faulty sender could be. A wire off the sender would result in an empty reading. The sender harness connector can be reached from the rear just inside the LR tire. Remove the harness connector, key up the tractor, gauge should read empty. Sender removal is accomplished by removing the seat and LH platform half on non-cabbed, non-SuperSteer tractors, and by removing the tank on other variations.

Anything else electrical not working? I had a poorly routed wire that had its insulation worn away and was blowing the fuse that (among other things) drove the fuel gauge. Just a thought.
