Yes, orezok, you are correct. I know I will continue with my firebreak, and perhaps widen it to 50 feet, along with the other measures I mentioned. I was just EXTREMELY fortunate on those days of the wildfire. For the 32 years I've lived here the wind alway blows out of the SW. On those particular days, the wind came directly out of the W and the fire skimmed by my property.
This wildfire season in WA state is a real nightmare. All available resources were already committed to other fires and in my case the firefighters could only stand by and watch it spread. Basically, this wildfire stopped because it ran out of fuel - a county road and massive fire breaks created by the local farmers with their equipment.
A strange surreal sight - the first evening of the fire, I went on a ridge top and could see for miles to the west. Everything to the west was black except for small burning fires spread over all the fields - burning hay bales.
