Good points... actually when I press the pedal it does not complain... does not lurch at all, so I am thinking that as someone said it is not in gear... when it's in "N" how far should the lever travel to be fully engaged in "L"? I was applying what seemed to be adequate pressure on the lever, and you're right, I stopped because I didn't want to break it. I know it's something simple because the delivery guy drove it off the truck and parked it in the garage for me before he left. I will have to wait til tomorrow to try again because it's parked in the garage at our new house... we are not living there yet and it's a few miles away. As you can tell this is my first tractor!

Is it April 1st already? The dealer didn't show you how to operate it? Mine did.

TNT- any gear lever I have ever moved- moved a few inches 2-4 at least. If your loader is up see if you can move it pushing on it? If so its not in a range-gear...

It's a JD 2520 and I ordered it from out of state, so no training. I am thinking it must not be in gear. I will try again tomorrow and report back. Thanks everyone.

Ok. looked over on the JD site, since it does not have a clutch, the range selector must be in N before it will start. so to the Original Poster, if you start the tractor and it starts, it is not in gear. and if you think it is in gear shut the engine off, and try to restart, if it starts, it was NOT in gear. make sure your foot is off of the hydro and the brake pedals, and push that range selector in gear. then go.

my 2520 was kinda hard to get in and out of gear when new . give it a firm hit with the heel of your hand it should go in gear .

Step on the forward reverse a little to get it spinning and pull gently on high / low handle and see if it go's in gear it might be but toothed and need some coaxing to get it in.

I have a 2720 that sometimes I have to step on the pedal while pushing/pulling the range selector to get it to drop into gear. Like Tom said, spin it up a little and try to shift.
