Rob, we have a long growing season if you water a lot and the bugs don't get it. Of course, a lot of people use insecticides successfully, and I use them around the house and shop, but don't put any chemicals in or on the vegetable garden. Not that I'm opposed to their use; just that I plant plenty for me and the bugs, too./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif And by the time the bug situation gets serious, we're usually tired of the garden, the freezer's full, and all my wife's canning jars are full./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif We might have used about 20% of the radishes before they went to seed and are ready to plow under, my wife gave away 8 gallons of cucumbers and 3 gallons of yellow squash yesterday alone, she's already canned 6 cases of green beans, and now they're in their prime; okra and black-eyed peas will be ready to pick next week, plums have started ripening (trees are overloaded), you could get a gallon or so of blackberries two or three times a week for another couple of weeks, but my wife says she's frozen all we can use, and I'm tired of the thorns. Cantaloupe are a little bigger than tennis balls now, corn and potatoes not ready yet, tomato vines are loaded but nothing ripe yet, wife says she's already frozen enough cauliflower and broccoli for the year, bell pepper plants are loaded. I'll probably plow under 3/4 of the beets and turnips, onions will eventually be tied in bundles to hang to dry (sometimes last into December). We're going to be out of town for several days next week, so we've told all the neighbors to come get anything they can use or give away./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif
