Re: It\'s tree removal time!

I'm gonna wait awhile on gettting my burn pile to actually burn. Today was spent knocking dowm more trees and brush.

This part of my property is in the 100 year flood zone. It is also next to a year round creek. The brush isn't too tough, but it's very thick.

Here's the view I have pushing it into piles.

The branches do fight back, and here's one trying to take off one of my hoses!

I did about a thousand feet of this. I need to clear enough to see where things will layout.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

With that type of brush I have a hard time pushing together a pile that doesn't include dirt. Tough to burn when full of dirt.

I have heard that a brush rake would make the job much cleaner.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

Brush rake absolutely will make the job cleaner. Guys rent our dozers with rakes all the time to do just that. A lot quicker in some types of jobs to use a rake rather than a trackhoe.

Yup, it's time for the rake.

When I bought my dozer, I told them I wanted delivery and a rake included in the price.

They took this one off a Cat D5 or D6, I forget.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

The person who built this rake made a mistake here. As you can see, there's no support, which caused the metal to bend when it was stressed.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

I took off the old tabs a few months ago. They fit this space fairly well and will give some needed strenghth.

This is the other side. The welds are busted and the metal is twisted.

I welded on this thing for an aweful long time. I still need to spend some more time on it, but for now, it's together.

I don't even want to guess what it weighs. The loader picks it up and moves it around, so I'm happy.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

With the rake sitting on the blade, I was able to tack on the new tabs. Since I really don't know what I'm doing, I figured to give myself a little space between the tabs to allow easy install and removal.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

Just an odd observation...

From what I see in your picture, those bends in the horizontal part of the rake have caused it to end up quite a bit more vertical than it was designed to be. Unless, of course, most of that horizontal part was bent the opposite direction from what one expects.

Just wondering if that's going to have any effect on operation.

Once things dry up a little, I'll give it a try and see what happens. I've never used a rake, so the learning curve is gonna start right at the bottom. Hopefully I don't break too many things in the process.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

I have about 60% of mine built. The steel for the vertical members is cut but not attached to the beam and tines.

I have been told to run the rake with just the tips of the teeth running through the dirt. The angle of the tines, they should be farther forward at the bottom, will allow brush to roll up the rake and dirt to fall out through the tines. Ideally you would get a rolling motion where at the end you have a tube of brush. It seems more likely that the brush will stack up from the bottom but this is still better than scooping up a bunch of mud.

When you welded the tabs to reinforce that failed section of horizontal angle do you think you could have welded it at 90 degrees so that it would fit into the angle instead of laying on its side? The reinforcement needs to be strong up and down. I suppose you may have needed to torch them to fit and like me, you may not have one handy.

The process with the rake is supposed to be as follows.

1) leave the rake off and walk over everything with the blade 6" off the ground just knocking everything over in the same direction. Do the whole area like this.

2) Then attach rake and run perpendicular to the fallen material pushing the knocked down material into windrows as far apart as your equipment, and the brush density, will allow. 300 feet is about as far apart as the rows should get.

3) burn the rows starting at the upwind/downhill end. Blow with a fan so that the fire consumes the windrow from one end to the other.

Of course the first step is to cut out the merchantable logs but it is getting to the point that that may be more hassle than it is worth.

Lighting these fires is not always easy, I like the propane weed burners shooting into a nice dense stack. On the other thread about fires I like the idea of a diesel soaked straw bale and a fan.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

Highbeam,

Thanks for the pointers. I'm ready for a test run, but the weather has other ideas. Too much mud to deal with, but in a day or two I'll put the rake on and see what happens.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

Before the rains hit, I was clearing some timber and had a tree jump over my blade and attack my hoses. Those trees can be very aggresive with hoses.

Bgoodman came by for a visit today and helped me fabricate a tree guard.

Here's a photo of Bobby welding it together.

Re: It\'s tree removal time!

The blade is all the way up in this picture. When it is down, the hoses are more vulnerable to attack. This guard should stop the trees from coming over the top.
