I'd say it took me about 9 weeks to build everything I have. Givers take a lifetime! I only have a small 120 miller make wielder, small 1/2" drill press, angle grinder, chop saw, bench grinder, and of course standard mechanic tools. Oh yes and my trusty cup gun for painting. It is immensely cheaper to build your own than to purchase. Building your own also gives you ways to innovate and adapt what others have done to fit your specific needs. I've spent less than 7 thousand in total. Including nuts, bolts, electricity, wielding materials, steel, everything. This has giving me a loader and all the attachments you see in my pics. You can find my other thread here under Built-it-yourself, it's called 20/20 hindsight. It has more details on my loader. Planning is everything, and execution is simple, you must have an open mind and understand the machine you are building, talk to others and design for yourself. Only start projects you can finish with the tools you have. I've already purchased out of that money everything I need to build a new tiller and snow blower. You can decide for yourself if it's cheaper. The power rakes by York start at about 6-7 thousand Canadian, for one the same size I built. A tiller here, 34 hundred and you can guess the rest. But that's not why I do it. I do it for my sons; you'll see one of them working. The picture is of my 3rd son he is 18. My youngest (16) was holding the camera. If you are impressed with the work, then you are impressed with my sons. And to that I must say thank you. I love to teach, but mostly I love to see their results. Yes I create the design, I observe and direct them on ever corner but youth will always have better eyes and a steadier hand, lol so I take advantage. Thanks for your comments and don't be afraid to try. What's the worst that can happen? You end up with a very expensive, very large lawn ornament! Hahaha! But you had fun.
