Re: I\'ve outgrown my tractor

That's not unreasonable for the Kubota, but maybe shy of what you want in HP, I guess. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif You really haven't said what scale of an operation you're looking into. Surely not 16 acres. If so, drop a bottom off your plow and keep your tractor.
If you have other land, then maybe you could use a bigger tractor. The 50-100hp hayfeild tractors have gone up since cattle did likewise. 100+hp range is the bargain, except for fuel , if your not taking advantage of the hp by using big equipment I see Case 1175, JD4430, Ford 8700 etc for $3-6k at austion The JDxx40s Indy speaks fondly of can't be had for under $10k around here (even worn out). Same goes for Ford 6xxx, 7xxx, but might could find a 5xxx around your budjet.A JD xx10, xx20, xx30, can also fit.,as well as some early to mid '80s IH, MF, BUT....take a real tractor mechanic with you to look at it before you buy and stay away from powershifts, even if it works fine....now.

Re: I\'ve outgrown my tractor

I am going to an auction this weekend to look at a MF265 with 1300hrs, 2 remotes, and diesel. It looks to be in good shape. It's relatively clean and looks like it has not been kept outdoors. I don't know the year, and I'm not convinced that matters just a whole lot, but if I look on machinerylink.com and look at the price variation depending on the year it makes a huge difference.

So I'm wondering if the year really matters? The range for these tractors in good shape on machinerylink is from 4100 to 8800 from years 75 to 82 I believe.

If the year doesn't really matter, what is this tractor worth in your opinion. I know it depends on location and all, but just ballpark it if you can. MF doesn't have a huge presence around here, there is one dealer somewhat close to me and that's it as far as anywhere close to this area.

Your input would be appreciated, the auction is this saturday. Any comments on this model would be appreciated also.

thanks.

Re: I\'ve outgrown my tractor

I'm not aware of any significant changes in the Massey Ferguson 265 during it's production run. (That doesn't mean there wasn't though....)

I'm a BIG fan of MF tractors in that size range, and from that time period. If it appears to be in good shape, I'd jump on it , should it sell at a fair price.

The only thing I'd (personally) stay away from is a tractor equipped with "multi-power". I never was impressed with that. Not very durable (IMHO)

Like you, I'm at a loss as to the huge price swing in just a few years.

Masseys have always been popular around here. (Good dealer network, popular size tractor for the type of farming that goes on here)(Tobacco/hay/cattle)

Good luck with the auction!

Re: I\'ve outgrown my tractor

I don't know a thing about MF tractors, but have a few thoughts on buying used and auctions.

Only 1,300 hours sounds decent. That's more important than what year it is in my opinion.

A friend told me about looking for chunks or gouges in the tires. If it has them, stay away, it was used on construction sites and probably abused.

Do the crawl under and look for damage, leaks and repairs. Pay attention to freshly painted areas. Fresh paint is used to hide things.

Run it first, then look at the fluids. Black oil is probably alright, but light colored oil or milky oil is very bad.

There really isn't allot of things that can go wrong on these things, and most problems have been worked out over the years. If it's been maintained then it's probably a decent tractor.

I looked at allot of used tractors before buying my CUT. In the end I bought brand new because the prices of what I was looking at were close enough to what I ended up buying brand new. Tractors seem to hold their values much better then cars!!!

As for auctions, set your max price and stay with it. Auction fever is for real, and it's amazing to see somebody buy something used when they could have bought the same thing brand new for less. It happens on Ebay everyday!!

Don't be in a rush to buy a tractor, and never fall in love with one you don't know anything about. There's always another deal out there, and often times, a better one will come along in time.

I look on equipmenttraderonline.com, ebay, amd machinerytrader.com for prices and models. I would also do a google and yahoo search on the model your looking at to see what comes up.

Re: I\'ve outgrown my tractor

If an auction is listing something I really am interested in:

One thing I've done is call the auction house & see the equipment a day or 2 before the auction. There's always people around setting up & have been able to inspect, drive around, & talk to the owner uninterrupted. Gives a warm fuzzy & better feel for setting price limit. Or walk away & not waste time going to the auction.

Re: I\'ve outgrown my tractor

Okay so it's been a while since I've posted to this thread, but I believe I've finally found something. There is a ford 3930 2wd for $9900 locally. It has turf tires and no remote which are negatives, but it is clean an only has 700 hours.

I'm thinking about making an offer on this tractor after I go give it a trip around the parking lot and it works good.

Any comments suggestions?

Re: I\'ve outgrown my tractor

So I bought the tractor for $9500. I think I got a good deal. It's hard finding a tractor like this that isn't beat up with tons of hours or just way too expensive for me. I believe this tractor will work well for me for a long time.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions/comments.
