There IS no excuse for putting WalMart oil in something that costs as much as a tractor or planter. I wouldn't use WalMart oil in my Farmall 140s. This whole thing smells bad.

I actually tried to buy Walmart Oil after reading positive info on TBN.

The Walmarts here don’t carry it and no Kubota dealers in several counties.

I ended up buying OEM and paying for shipping.

I have had Grainger open for me on a holiday weekend for the Hospital… it was well worth it and I couldn’t thank the lady enough and she said they go by seniority and I just paid for her 4th of July home BBQ…

Deere is well-known for locking its customers into using proprietary -- Everything. Even their hitches are proprietary. Everything they do, they try to make certain you can only get it from a Deere Dealer. Even their paint is sooper-secret Deere-only, and they'll sue yer butt off if you copy it.

And don't even try to work on it yourself. I think we're all aware of that charlie-foxtrot

Deere makes excellent, superb equipment. But before you buy one, any of them, you need to be aware that you're married to that Dealer for -- Almost Everything. If they could, they'd corral you into using Deere branded diesel fuel.

Just -- Be aware.

To be fair, I'm not really all that familiar with their really big stuff. I'm sure Deere is really good at that. It seems to be where they spend all their time and engineering money. What bugs me is -- It might be appropriate in the really big equipment because it's so technical and so highly engineered, but they carry the philosophy down to their Lawn Mowers. Annoying but if you like their equipment, just be aware. They own yer butt.

I haven't been closely following the various "right to repair" movements, but I do know that the proprietary stranglehold did not work out too well for some large companies like IBM.

Mislabeled, fraudulent marketing and failing to warn not to mix their product with John Deere hygard hydraulic oil plugged up the oil passages in the transmission. Moreover, it ruined the 1750 6 row planter vacuum metered pump with less than 300 acres on it. After the sudden and catastrophic failure, I began to question why would an oem parts/fluid annually maintained tractor and transmission fail out of the blue. The answer was Wal-Mart and Highline Warren Super Tech Tractor and Transmission Universal fluid - it was the only thing I did differently this planting season. I needed an emergency supply after 2 planter hoses unexpectedly burst. Never have I used anything other than hygard in the 2500 hours of use until this isolated situation. I looked for a reliable and safe substitute and Walmart showed a John Deere tech pouring the product into a large John Deere row crop tractor, implying it was recommended by JD. The label stated it was applications calling for several manufacturers standards including JD20c. Walmart and highline Warren lost a 10M class action suit over this same oil label where they advertised it as 303 ingredient (sperm whale oil) when in fact that ingredient was outlawed in the 1970s. This wasn’t the first time they were called out for the same deception and government investigators found the oil to have amongst other subpar ingredients, used transformer oil mixed in it. Really? Would any of you willingly put used transformer oil in your $150,000 row crop tractor? I had no reason to know any different bc I always used hygard but this time I didn’t have any on hand and it was a Sunday morning. Both corporations were aware of this mislabeling and failure to warn deception but have done nothing to correct it in such a way to deter my purchase had it warned to not mix oils, let alone lacking an ISO rating. They lied about a product of theirs and many of us farmers have been damaged by their greed. We as consumers rely on labeling to decide on purchases such as this and consumer protection laws are in place for this very reason. I do not possess a petroleum engineering degree and this it was more important to disclose the oils limitations. It advertised equality to John Deere by the labeling and it failed to do what the label explicitly said it would do - protect my $150,000 tractor. It didn’t. Factually, it did just the opposite and caused a complete shutdown of our field operations to this day. That was 3 months ago. 3 days of intermittent use was all it took to render my only row crop inoperable during the crop protection season. A claim was filed with solid evidence along with many legal precedents demanding repair costs, business interruptions and irreparable crop damages compensation for their product liability just last week. The tractor reman IVT replacement cost is over $50,000 alone given the need to split the tractor. That machine’s maintenance record exceeds John Deere schedule and had no transmission or hydraulic issues whatsoever prior to that day I topped off the sump with 10 gallons of their fluid.

I’m posting this not for advise but rather wanting to know how many others out there have large corporations lying to them, if not the ones aforestated here. Consumers are protected against fraudulent products and we have no clue who is stealing from us farmers and other hard working Americans alike. Attached are pictures of the label as well as what happens when super tech is mixed with hygard. If you or someone you know has suffered losses after using this product, please do not sit on your hands and assume you have no rights to make these companies be held culpable for their product liabilities.
So you needed to add 10 gallons of oil to get it full ? That sounds like a lot of oil, are you sure running it 10 gallons low isn’t what actually may have caused your problems ?
I’m Very sorry to hear of your very expensive issues , hopefully your dealer will miraculously find out your issues aren’t as bad as you think .

I’m not going to call out the OP, it’s a bad deal no matter what the problem. I do run JD Hygard, I’ve always stuck with OEM hydraulic fluid. Antifreeze, engine oil, gear oil etc. I run quality fluids but not usually OEM.

It doesn't really exist with Deere. For under $200 per machine you can have nearly full Service Advisor capability. And that includes the tech manual integrated in. I don't think you can get that from ANY other major manufacturer. In my experience so far, Deere is the MOST open, not the LEAST open.

Oil testing would have told the full story, and Walmart settled the case. If there was any legitimate blame on the OP, I don't think Walmart would have settled.

That said, pictures of products on a container are not product specifications, including compatibility specifications. So to the extent that was the criteria for selecting the oil, well, that's not very good diligence. Deere also has tighter requirements for their IVT transmissions. One of the Deere oil specs is OK if met by a third party oils, but not the other. And Deere's own HyGard is OK, but not the low viscosity HyGard. Regardless, the oil shouldn't have turned to milk, so pretty clearly some other source of major incompatibility.
