In addition to the lack of 'reading', the growing use of text messaging has also spilled over into many forms of written communications. k, tks, cya

I have to agree. I spell fine.. I type pretty good too. That is.. for accurate edited and syntax checked copy.. i can hit about 60-75 wpm. For answering email and general usage.. I usually hit 90+wpm. And unless i see huge errors that will prevent clear understanding of what i typed.. I rarely go back to correct the mistakes. I mostly get to answer email in between phone calls and other projects at work.. during lunch, and on breaks.. so every second counts. Correcting every message might mean the difference in reading a couple messages vs reading a entire forum.. etc.

I am a much better speller than a typist. I frequently have to make corrections as I type. I use but don't depend on a spell checker, however I have noticed my spelling accuracy has deteriated(sp?) since the wide availability of spell checkers.

Do I judge intelligence of the writer based on spelling and grammar. I would, for the most part, say no. I do judge their education or their care about presentation based on spelling and grammar. I give a great deal of credit when it comes to those things that seem to be the result of speed (as in hasty not the recreational chemical). However there are many posts that I might be able to contribute to, but don't, because the grammar or spelling cause me to be unsure of the writers question or comment.

As far as spelling I always use a spell checker. Generally I am OK at spelling (Thanks to the brutal teaching methods of Mrs. Hawes) but some times I have bad spell days, or bad typing days. Therefore I always use a spell checker, usually IEspell (www.iespell.com). Now I wish I could find a "iegrammar".

I'll second that. The Christian school my kids attended stressed language arts as a core subject. They attended public school last year and both scored in the 98 percentile on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. My 8th grade daughter can diagram sentences at a collage freshman level. That being said, she uses IM contractions (k, tks, cya) and has to be corrected to use proper form when doing assignments. The sad part is her teachers told us in conferences that it doesn't really matter as long as she gets the jest of the lesson. I disagree. Spelling and grammar may not matter on a chat board but it is an important skill to have in life.

Bummer:
So my taking the Evalyn Woodhead sped redin' course that was to improv my redin' comprehension 100 precent was a waste.

I generally do not have a problem with spelling and rarely use a spell checker, but I do need one from time to time. For someone to conclude that bad spelling means ignorant or poorly educated is a bit of a stretch though. I know several people who are very intelligent (Master's degrees, Presidents of million dollar companies etc.) but have issues with spelling.

Kind of reminds me of a show I saw on PBS about intelligence, common sense and book knowledge. They started the show with an Autistic man who could play the piano (in fact all he had to do was listen to the song a few times and then he could play it on the piano). He never had any lessons and could play better than I do and I've had lessons for most of my childhood. Put him in a classroom and he was an instant failure. He can't read, he can't write etc.
The jest of the show was some scientific thought that intelligence is a sliding scale between common sense and book sense. The more book sense you have, the less common sense you'll have. Which does seem to hold some water. I have met people who were extremely gifted in the book learning arena (physicists, Quantum theory types) that didn't have the sense to come in out of the rain. By the same token I have seen people who couldn't complete basic school that could con you out of your life savings. So to say someone is an unintelligent bafoon because he doesn't spell well is a real joke.

Just an opinion.

Don't you mean "gist" instead of "jest"?;)

Sorry, Curt, I just couldn't resist.:D

flwiii, we don't want to forget that "ignorant" doesn't mean a lack of intelligence. We're all ignorant of things we don't know or haven't learned, but an ignorant person can be taught. And "poorly educated" may or may not be the student's fault. I can, personally, think of several people that I know who were "poorly educated" and "ignorant" of many things, but are highly intelligent.

Misuse of words (see below) I've always assumed are people being in a hurry.

Your - You're
Their - They're - There

In a hurry? Maybe. "Your" and "you're" is a particular pet peeve of mine. The first is a posessive second person adjective -- "your tractor" for example. The second is the contraction of "you are". Their misuse has to be the most common grammatical error on this site. "Your" gets used for "You're" more often than not.

I am afraid the late Shirley Piland (my wonderful English and Journalism teacher from high school) has rubbed off on me. In reading a post on this forum, particularly a lengthy one trying to make a serious point, the writer can get by with one or two spelling or grammar errors. After that my interest in what is being said starts to wane. Shirley was not a "content" teacher. The first spelling or grammar error took your paper from an A to an A-. The next one took you to a B+. So, regardless of what you had to say, 11 little mistakes in a 5 or 6 page paper and you failed.

I said my kids scored high in language skills, not me. I'd be more embarrassed if flwii hadn't followed up my post using the same word. Maybe we should form a poor spellers support group :)

I sure wish I had noticed the spell check up in the corner when I replied to the other post.

I agree that spelling on forums is something awful. I just chalk it up to the author as being busy. What is worse than the spelling is the missing or improper punctuation. I have read some posts, here and other sites as well, where I didn't know what the person was trying to say. I just gave up and moved on. People aren't proof reading their work and that is obvious. The level of some errors just can't be missed in a proof read.

The other thing that I don't like is how we as a society have accepted the abbreviation of most everything. Thanks to Instant Messaging everything is abbreviated. LOL, BTW, DW, DH, IMHO  just to point out a very few.
Just spell the word so people know what you are saying.
