It's great having others promote my arguments! I'm one of those folks who can't allow himself to spell badly or use incorrect grammar. Lately I've been calling it "monking" (after the USA Network TV obsessive-compulsive detective character played by Tony Shaloub), but it's mostly just natural with me. As I'm typing this I seem to catch my errors almost immediately and correct them. As someone else alluded, I read books in my youth in the 50's rather than watching TV so that had an effect. Also, in my career I have spent much time interacting with foreign nationals who did not have idiomatic American English as their first language. To prevent misunderstanding, I gradually learned to be more precise and correct in both my speech and writing, and that I could be almost perfectly accurate when writing because it was not subject to "real time" errors.

However, it doesn't matter to me if y'all don't follow my example. Didn't say it didn't bother me, just that it doesn't matter. ;-D

I always thought it was the fault of my keyboard that caused me to miss spell "from". Now I have to blame my left hand. :D

I remember back to the old days when you could set typematic rate low, and/or high leatent low speed connections that used echo for keystrok typing on old bulleting boards. it was sometimes very easy to overtype and not see what was comming out as it was being typed.. made it kinda hard back then... ( this was pre-al gore inventing the internet.. etc.. (grin) )

There are two women in our company that can still out-type the computers... That is... they type so fast that they can stop typing and watch the screen catch up.

sounds like my wife - she can type as fast as I can read ......... but then she needs spell check to catch her few typos .... or she needs me to proof read - she has a bad habit of "over-reading" the typos.

What I've concluded is - the quality of education has dropped continuosly for a lot of years - for a lot of reasons. reasons include, but I'm sure are not limited to, 1. money of course, 2. there is more to teach now than in the past so each area doesn't get the coverage it used to, (I didn't have to learn a thing about a computer when I was in school - they were big machines that took up an entire floor of a downtown building) 3. there seems to be more "admin" that teachers are saddled with and "requirements" that they have to contend with. It almost discourages good teachers from being inovative. 4. Discipline isn't what it used to be - at home or at school - ......... I'm thinking the system needs an entire overhaul --- starting with changing the mindset of parents and Joe Public on the importance of our future in general as the result of short changing the kids education. Every school bond that hits the street should be looked at with not what it will take out of our pockets today - but what it will cost us in the future if we don't pass it.
and whatta know - after 5 1/2 years I finally made veteran status with this post

Happy 1,000th post!

I'm 110% in agreement with the discipline/parental guidance comment(s). If a person is driven enough, be it SELF driven, or parents pushing, they'll learn more from everyday life, from school, and most importantly, learn how to be a parent themselves. There seems to be a mindset today that just concieving a child qualifies one as a parent. I've seen too many kids having kids. They never had the opportunity to learn how to RAISE a child to adulthood. There are plenty of bad influences in our society. Most have always been there. It's that parental guidance that educates a youngster to the "right vs. wrong" of those influences. Only then can a child get the "book smarts" that takes them to the next level.
