I am not so sure that the quality fo education has gone down. I think it is dependent on where you live. There are great average and poor school districts all over. Seems to me that our great state and private universities and colleges are getting the studens fomr somewhere.

My daughter is a teacher and she taught int he worst school in America. Front page of the New York Times several times. It was in Philadelphia and the school was taken over by a private company. She was hired by the private company. In these so called "bad" schools you have to understand that teachers can not ameliorate the social and economic problems of the students. It is too much for a teacher. I was proud that my daughter made it through a hwole eyar, the principal couldn't make it, she cut and ran before Christmas. And the princiopal went int toeh school with high ideals and a big heart and a P.h.D.

Sure there are some "bad" schools, however they are a direct result of the community they are in.

Moss Road = You always get your point across in your posts and all of us know what you mean... from your posts we've learned you're an apricot farmer in New Zealand married to an author on olive pits. :)

Apricot farmer.....;) You are so funny.

It's nice to see people still typing. Too many 2 finger 'peckers' out there now...

When i was in school.. typing was mandatory.. I'm not sure if it is now..??

Iowachild - Same here. Both parents and all 4 grandparents could type. It was not an option. For me in 1961 it was summer school before 9th grade and then as a sophomore in HS. Typing is my most used school skill after reading. It sure paid off at college. I did not have to, as some did, date a girl they really didn't like so they could get their papers typed or spend hours at it with two fingers. I also could do my own keypunching for computer courses. These days spell check has allowed me to let my typing skills slip somewhat.

I would think that with the 'information age' engulfing everything.. that ALL kids would be learning to type.. and be very good at it.. however... most kids are just good at a joy stick.. and still do the 2 finger pecking..

I really didn't like typing in school.. but it has come in sooooo usefull int he 'real world'. Besides school work.. it has opened up some decent job opportunities.

Unfortunately proofreading anything I write does not work to well. Unless I wait a couple days so I have forgotten what I wrote. Otherwise my mind just fills in missing or misspelled words.

Soundguy,
All my kids took a required course called "keyboarding" here. My boys are competent typists but my daughter is a whiz!:D

When I was in high school I took typing for three specific reasons:

1. It was a blow off class with no homework. :)
2. Only me and my buddy in a class of 28 girls. :D :D :D
3. The treacher had a nice '67 Chevy that I was trying to get her to sell me.

(I didn't get the car or a date ;) )

Had a friend in high school that was dating one of his teachers.

Of course, he was 23 at the time. ;) (He drove his car to our 8th grade graduation)

Oh yeah, he's now high up in state government. And he married the teacher.

I suspect it was still going on but back then the boy would not have been considered abused but "lucky". When I was a kid there occasionally were teachers of both sexes that would 'suddenly" disappear for unknown, at least to the students, reasons. Looking back I now wonder if this type of activitiy was the reason. I had a few for which I would have been a willing volunteer.
