Javelina attack

/ Javelina attack #21
The week long stay was a last minute decision on Sunday. I didn't anticipate needing to go anywhere so I let my wife take my pickup back to Phoenix until Friday. I need to get another old pickup that we can just leave up here for such emergencies I guess.

Mr. Fuller do the ranchers and sheepherders still have dogs . Remember living east of Seligman the sheep herders dogs were big looked like part wolf. and if your dog came close to the herd they would of run it off.
Coyotes also were large would come to camp area and raid the trash cans. Camp dogs sat on porch and watched.
Also neighbors cat one evening refused to go out side so owner picked it up and tossed
onto the front porch and a bob cat in tree attacked it. so cat running to tree up tree and bob cat after it.
he got his shot gun and waited until cat was on porch and then shot the bob cat.
which ran into the brush never saw again.
Was a person that hunted Mt. cats named lanny
Lanear shot one that filled the bed of his pick-up . Should still be in Seligman .
So there is several type of varmits that live there.
Trust the dog heals fast.

The longer I'm here the more I hear of more dangerous critters. I knew about coyotes and javelina, but then heard about mt. lion, bobcat, cougar, bear, wolf, and who knows what else. That's why I'm ALWAYS packing. I think I even have my wife convinced that she needs to carry. She will sometimes take off exploring. I need to get her a nice 9mm.

I need to get her a nice 9mm.

And let her choose it. Pistols can feel very different in another person's hand. Be sure she can work the slide without difficulty, and load a magazine with cartridges. Some women have difficulty doing those.

Good advice.

Make sure the furniture on the weapon is pink it will put her at ease. The other day I was at a indoor range when a petite gal came in with a pink AR-15. I don't remember if I was looking more at her or that weapon.

You have made it so far .So past experance and future planning .
When was the last time did news tell of Mt lion attack a human. or even the coyote will avoid people.
We must smell rotten to them. More likely to be bit by a dog. or a snake.
Here we have rabid skunks.they don't respect anyone.

I usually recommend a .357 revolver for shooters that are not familiar with guns. Nothing to remember about how to work it, just point and pull the trigger. If it doesn't fire the first time due to a misfire, just pull the trigger again. There is a wide verity of ammo in .357 from mild with only a slight kick to full load with the ability to knock down anything that roams in the US.

When I pulled of the drive this morning to go get gravel, and was at the same spot where I was tractoring the other day, hence the approx spot of my dog's misfortune, a deer with a sizable rack was standing there looking at me. It was almost like he was saying, "yeah, I did it. What are you going to do about it?" I guess I'll never know just what it was.

That's a good point. Could have been the deer. Our neighbor saw a dog, we used to have, get tossed into the air by a buck. She didn't have any punctures but some good scrapes.

Hello all. Thanks for all the prayers. We took Boo to the vet this morning and he kept her for a couple hours. He shaved her affected areas so she looks kinda funny. Some sub-terranean flushing and a bunch of medical jargon that is way over my head but made my nurse wife happy. Good news is that she should be fine in a week or so.

He partially closed the punctures to help keep dirt out but left them partially open to ooze and heal better. There are two on her right rear leg and two lesser ones on her left rear leg and a tear on her vulva, which he stitched up. He took me to a back room where he pulled out several plastic models of skulls; javelina, mt. lion, coyote, and such. And he had a plastic set of antlers. The antlers matched up the most closely with all the holes and tears, convincing him it was a deer.

We have some antibiotics and some pain medicine for her, but the prognosis is good. PTL

Ever heard of leash?

I assume this is a joke. We have 40 acres in the middle of a thousand acres of woods. To use a leash would be considered cruel and unusual punishment in my book, regardless of what nature allows.

Boo, our Rotty, is almost completely healed now. When I took her up to the Ranch last weekend, she wouldn't get out of he truck when I stopped at the end of the lane, approximately where she had her run-in. Further back, at the end of the drive she jumped out and was fine. She's a little more cautious now. I think she learned that other animals can be tough. Thanks for all the prayers and concerns.
