i have an 1990 1400B JCB backhoe 4x4 with extend a dig. The backhoe will run strong for approx 15 mins then tires will barely moved then stop-that happens in forward and back. If you turn the hoe off and crank it up within a few seconds it will run strong for 3-5 Mins then repeat above scenerio. Any suggestions i am going crazy. I changed the trans oil and filter even ran diesel fuel for 3 mins in trans to clean out shuttle valves-NO CHANGE please help

It sounds like you have a valve stuck open or closed. I would contact a local dealer and talk to service guy's there. Wish you the best.
Does the hoe/loader work fine?

Yes the hoe works great and also the loader. I have had problems with my ignition switch would that affect the solenoids on top of the transmission

I have a very similar backhoe with the same problem. I also have changed the fluid and filter. I talked to a mechanic today and he said if it is too full it might cause air bubbles in the oil. He also suggested checking the solenoids to see if the have good magnetism when engaged. I checked mine with a piece of steel and they were magnetic on the ends when engaged. I can also hear the relays clicking under the dash. Thinking about pulling the valve tomorrow and seeing if it is hanging up or not shifting fully but that really doesn't make sense when it will drive good sometimes and then lose power while driving.

jcbdigger, any luck with your hoe?

Thanks,
Matthew

try changing the electric breaker/solenoid? under instrument panel front towards eng controls start also it will click and seems like it works but it won't try shorting across term with wheels off ground and i bet this will tell you this a bad part run in gear for a while i believe it gets hot and loses output voltage and valve partial return to nuetral

Did anyone get a solution to this problem. I have a JCB 1400B Backhoe, year 1992. It has a similar problem. It works fine until the transmission has time to heat up. It will then have both the reverse and forward shuttle shift clutch plates engaged. It is four wheel drive. With wheels off the ground, they run in reverse with shift stick in neutral position. Reverse position has no effect. With shift stick in forward, the wheels lock. Applying power forces the wheels to go forward, with considerable load on motor. The transmission has to cool down for it to work correctly again. In colder weather, it takes longer to have the problem. I have pulled the transmission and had the shuttle shift clutch plates and seals replaced by a local hydraulics specialist. This was suggested as the cure by our local JCB dealer. The problem stayed the same. I am suspecting it is the shift valve, but confused how it could be applying hydraulic pressure to both sides of the shuttle clutch at the same time? Please help! I have the same problem with my Jcb 4cx, did anyone have a solution?

That's an uncalled for, unhelpful and probably inaccurate comment.

Maybe a particular issue unique to this machine.

You're absolutely correct.

There is a reason why JCB have the world's best-selling backhoe loader and it's definitely not because they're junk.

Agree. JCB practically invented the backhoe. They are one of the worlds most respected manufacturers of heavy equipment. Pretty highly regarded backhoes.

Are you able to determine if your actual problem is valves sticking or an electonic failure(bad sensor or circut board failing). I once had a circut board fail on a JD and perfectly mimiced fuel pump failure.
Good luck

I remember talking to a heavy equipment tech about backhoes and he told me JCB backhoes develop a problem similar to what’s been described. He said the fix was pretty simple and inexpensive. I thought he said it was a solenoid in the dash, but this conversation took place a few years ago. Cant remember the fix!

Has anyone figured out the problem? I have a 96 JCB 214E shuttle shift 4X4 backhoe that also wants to go into reverse after it warms up and then not move at all a few minutes later. Even with the newly replaced solenoid valve wires disconnected.
