jd 1050 hydraulic problems

Hello:

I am having the following issues with my john deere 1050. The timeline is as follows:


When I bought the tractor, the hydraulics were jerky. More so with the john deere 75 loader and less so with the 3 point. A mechanic came out and drained the hydraulic fluid, replaced the hydraulic filter and cleaned the screen. (There was water in the fluid) Immediately thereafter, the front end loader and the 3 point worked or seemed to work fine. I parked the tractor for several months. Several weeks ago I tried to use the tractor and neither the loader or three point would lift. I again called the mechanic and he came out and drained the fluid, cleaned the screen and drained the filter but reused it. (There was some water in the fluid) Once again the loader and 3 point worked. Two days later, I tried to use the tractor and nothing worked. (The tractor was covered and there had been no rain in the preceding interval) The mechanic thinks it needs a new pump. I am not opposed to replacing the hydraulic pump, but it seems odd that it lifts immediately following a drain and refill. I would welcome any insight or advice and I would be happy to answer any questions to assist you with information that I may have left out.

I suggest the mechanic needs to do a flow and pressure test before condemning the main pump.

Do you think the FEL is a John Deere one installed on a new tractor or an after market one?

How many hoses are on the FEL valve, 6 or 7?

If you are handy at all, and depending upon your answers to my questions above, you could remove the IN hydraulic line at the FEL valve and direct the open end into a clean bucket to judge the volume flowing out. If you don't have volume then there will not be pressure. The clean bucket so you can reuse the fluid.

Hydraulic fluid under pressure is dangerous. It can be injected through your skin in even an invisible leak.

I have a Workshop manual for the next model, a 1070. The hydraulics are complicated if you have power steering and rear remotes in addition to the FEL valve.

I will wait for your answers before adding more.

I agree with Dave more diagnostics need to be performed before condemning the hyd pump. JD model 75 loader parts catalog only shows hyd hoses routed into SCV breakaways IE no ind control valve is that how your loader is controlled???

Many hyd pumps have been replaced only to determine the replaced pump wasn't the problem

Thank you Dave for your response. The FEL has 7 hoses. I think it has power steering and it does have 2 remotes. I am unsure if the fel was original to the tractor or an after market. My guess would be after market.

Just a wild stab in the dark.......if your hyd pump is above the level on your tank/reservoir you may be experiencing an air leak between the hyd pump and reservoir. When the tractor sits for a long time air can allow the oil in the suction line to settle back to reservoir level and the pump loses its prime. In your initial post you mentioned jerky hydraulics, it could be the shaft seal on the pump that would suck air to make it jerky and would also allow the pump to lose prime if it sits unused. A flow meter would show in a heart beat if this theory proves out, the needle on the flow meter would fluctuate with the air entrainment.

I also would not condemn the pump without proper testing with flow meter.

Oh, another thing........if it is losing prime stand by with an air hose/rag to pressurize the reservoir if the pump doesn’t start up within a few seconds.
