John Deere 1050 pre 11001 sn
Hello all! First time poster and a novice at tractors. I bought a 1982 1050 and we can't get the hydraulics running. Sounds like the same issue as this thread.

Let me start from the beginning. Hydraulics quit working as soon as we got it. Realized there was water in the fluid as well as deteriorated hose. Flushed four times and got new hoses all around. I am cleaning the metal filter in-between each flush. Rear suction hose I got doesn't fit so I put the old one back on, it looks ok. Front is new and from JD. The metal filter looks fine after the first flush. Changed the filter with an identical wix filter that was already on it. Everything worked for 3-5 minutes and stopped. Changed the filter with a new wix filter again, worked for 3-5 minutes and stopped working. Realized front of screw on filter housing hose has collapsed. (Again, new JD hose)

Took the metal sump filter out and bypassed the spin on filter system with heater hose. Ran it for 10-15 minutes and is working as intended.

Changed to an OEM JD filter (metal pre filter still out) ran for 5 minutes and hose has collapsed again. What am I missing? Thanks in advance!

A lot of "this and that" to sort through here, but what hose is collapsing? For openers, you don't want "heater hose" for oil or fuel. It will soften and fail in short order. Get that off as soon as possible and replace it with fuel/oil resistant hose of the proper size. If the hose material is soft you may want to find a proper sized spring to put inside before installing it.

Harry,

Thanks for replying. I knew that much info was going to be confusing!

Ill include a link to the diagram of the part. The hose in question is no 17. Which is in front of the filter and ties into the metal intake line for the hydraulic pump.

I just used the heater hose as a bypass for troubleshooting. Basically I wanted to take the spin on filter assembly out of the equation to see if it fixed the issue. Which it did. Im not running it that way permanently.

No 17 is brand new, and the part number specified from JD. As far as I can tell JD does not require a spring here for normal operation.

What John Deere (or Yanmar for that matter) requires is one thing, but what actually happens in the real world may be different. My experience shows that suction hoses collapse in operation mainly for two reasons. 1) The hose is too soft or too thin. 2) The vacuum created by the pump is too great for the restriction of whatever medium the oil has to flow through and the weakest link shows up first. While the hose you have may be new, it's still a replacement part for something originally made thirty plus years ago. What's made today (by whoever makes them) may not be the same other than overall size and shape. The material strength or thickness might well be somewhat less than it should be. At this point I would be considering putting a spring inside.
