JD 110 tlb front pinion shaft bad

Unfortunately on my 2009 the front drive shaft roll pins are fine, in many cases they wear and affect the couplers ability to engage the pinion shaft splines resulting in no front wheel drive.

Upon inspection it appears the rear facing 2/3 of the pinion splines are worn/rounded resulting in no front wheel drive. I can remove the roll pin and move the coupler forward and get enough spline bite to get front wheel drive.

So it appears the fix is going to be replacing the pinion shaft HOWEVER the technical service manual indicates the ring and pinion should be replaced as a set and it appears to be a highly technical repair with some specialized tools, or buy the assembly as a unit which is very expensive.

Anyone ever taken on the repair and could offer any wisdom?

Yup sounds costly. Short of rigging it up by doing something like pushing the yoke/driveshaft forward and welding it on the pinion you should replace everything worn.

You really should replace that driveshaft yoke along with the ring and pinion anyway so welding it onto the pinion wont be doing much more damage.

Yeah. I thought about a couple of spot welds on the high points of the spline so they could easily be removed with a cutoff wheel as a grinder. It should be enough to hold the collar forward as a temp fix while I try to find the parts.

Welding up the splines and grinding them to fit won't last long, but you have little to lose but your time and effort. Same with a jury rigged extended coupler to reach undamaged splines. Might work for a while, but not for long. You need to consider the cause of the problem, not just the patch. When you find the time to do it right, look closely at the bushings where the axle assembly pivots. They're going to need replacing along with the ring and pinion repair. After the effort and expense of this repair, a tube of grease will look like a bargain.
