JD 172 hydro

Anyone have any experience with an older 172 hydro?

hood decal just says 172 Hydro. no LX or anything else.

Hydro is on fender instead of foot pedals. 14hp, 38" cut.
Issues appear brake is out of adjustment. braking brings
hydro lever back to neutral, but this one does not take it all
they way back into neutral and starts rolling again when you let
up the brake. You have to keep your hand on hydro lever to truly
stop. Also deck adjustment seems off, very little difference in deck height
from the highest setting to lowest.

I'm assuming both issues might be fixable by minor repair.
Body is in great shape. mower deck has paint peeling but no rust.
Engine seemed strong. no tall grass around to see if it would bog down
any.

fellow asked $450 for it.

I was thinking about as something for mowing around house and under short trees. I have a 2320 for most of my cutting.

Is it worth this amount or do issues sound like much trouble?

It sounds like a 175 hydro. They're not a bad machine. If the belts. spindles, blades, engine, axle/steering spindle's ect. are all in good shape then it's probably not a terrible deal. If any of thats suspect then you have to evaluate how much you want to put in versus how much your going to get out of it.
