1978 JD 2040 tractor and 175 FEL available locally

Tractor had almost 5,000 hours of use but is in good condition. Appears to be well maintained. Stored indoors.

What would you value this package at?

Based on what? it has been repainted. Those are not OEM decals. Have you seen and ran it in person? Does the tach work? What issues is new paint covering up? Sight unseen and winging it $5000 and I'm not sure I would go that much.

Thank you for your response

Yes, the tach works and the tractor runs seemingly fine. Tractor has no significant leaks (hydro/transmission/engine oils). Tractor is parked at same part of the barn/concrete floor for the past 8 years and no apparent staining.

Parts of the tractor have been repainted such as the hood and loader but the rest of the paint is OEM.

Seller is a regular guy and seems very honest and forthcoming on issues with the tractor (which are few).

You have sat on this tractor personally?

Need many more pictures and no that entire tractor has been repainted.

Yes … I have sat on this tractor. And I have operated it. No apparent issues.

Okay. I stand by my price and the fact the entire tractor is repainted. Keep in mind the actual hours are probably slightly to much higher due to the style of hourmeter. The hourmeter on those tractors only recorded an actual hour IF it was run at pto rated rpms. Meaning if it spent an easy life operating for an example 1500-1800 rpms it will take longer than an hour to record an hour on the meter.

If I was looking to buy that tractor and the guy said only parts of it were repainted I would walkaway. He isn't honest.

The real rough and beat up high hour 2040's seem to be (asking) around $6k at the auction houses. The paint issue doesn't appear to me to be the typical throw paint over the rust and dirt to get it sold thing. Other than the non OEM stripes and lettering, it appears to be a reasonable (full) paint job. Why the seller is saying it's not completely repainted is beyond me.
All that said, I think it's worth more than $5k with no obvious problems like excessive blowby, leaks, clutch, good rubber, etc. Maybe $8k, but that is just a guess. It really comes down to how much risk the buyer is willing to take on a high hour tractor.
