JD 212 Tiller: rear or front mount?

Thanks again for the info, you have been very helpful. The gear I was referring to shows up in this thread on a another forum: Weekend Freedom Machines: Tiller model 31 (I'm not sure of the rules regarding linking to another forum -- I apologize to the moderators if I've violated protocol).

I think the tiller is a model 31. I'll have to go back and look at it but it looks very similar.

I'm still wondering what would happen if I did it the way the previous owner did -- do you think I can hook it to the front in place of the snowblower and till a garden in reverse?

Also Bruce -- you are saying that I can somehow hook up the tiller to the back without a lift kit. I'll have to look into that. . . I'm not sure how that would work because as of now the back end of the 212 just has a hitch (i.e. where you would pin a tow behind wagon or a sprayer, etc) and I think the tiller needs a hook up on either side of it, right?

Unfortunately the model 31 manual is not available online.

The 30" tiller that was connected without a lift rod is a different design. It mounts the the frame of the mower on a couple of fancy bolts indicated as number 15. This is a picture of its mount kit

You have been exceptionally helpful, and I thank you.

I have been trying to figure out exactly which tiller I have, but I am having trouble reading the little serial number plate.

Any advice on how I can differentiate between a 30 and 31? (I assume it has to be one of those).

The mounts and drive systems are different.
