Hi guys, I purchased a used JD 2210 in March '08, and it's done everything I've asked of it and more. Recently I decided I'd like to measure the hydraulic pressure to the FEL just to see if it's putting out the pressure it should. There was no other reason (no lack of lifting power, etc.) - just curiosity.

Well, I put together the guage set up and hooked it up this evening. I measured about 2100psi out of each port. I thought they would all be the same, but my question is... this measurement did not change with anything I did with the RPMs, whether at idle or PTO speed. Is this normal?

The specs in the manual say 1987psi maximum operating pressure, but do not give a specific RPM. Based on other numerous posts I've read here, I'm not too worried about my reading being about 100psi about the stated max (much more and I would be, creating a different weak spot, etc.). Also in the specs it says the type of hydraulics is 'open center', with a 'position' draft control type. That's about it. I just thought the pressure would increase with an increase in the throttle.

Thank you all in advance for your input.

Yes Mark, that is perfectly normal. These are constant pressure pumps. Only the flow (GPM) change with the RPM's.

Mark,
What you found is that the hydraulic pump still has close tolerances and appears to be in good shape. I would leave it as is.

Kennyd and Steve, thanks so much for your input and quick responses.

The guage set-up was harder to assemble than I thought it would be; finally took advice from a previous Kennyd post and ordered most of the parts from the Surplus Center. I purchased the male quick connect at the dealer, and the parts guy acted like he'd never heard of somebody wanting to measure the hydraulic pressure on their tractor. He even went so far as to say he didn't know if they measured it there in the shop. Just from reading TBN, I know it's a mildly popular topic that comes up now and again. Oh well, I just found his comments interesting.

Thanks again for your advice and help. Love this site!

Chances are good that the parts guy doesn't really know what goes on in the shop. All tractor repair shops are going to find a need to measure pressures and flow rates within the hydraulic systems. Usually only needs to be done when diagnosing a problem. No real need to check pressure unless you suspect something not working right. On the other hand, it is nice to know it is performing as it is intended to.
