I am going to buy either a JD 2210 or a JD 4110 . I have been reading every post I can find regarding the 2210 and the 4110. Though I am normally a decision maker I find myself stymied. I have driven both (not much difference in handling I thought). I even have a 2210 in my garage this moment, (it goes back this week if I decide on the 4110 instead.) So I thought I’d try a few more questions of the board. Quite frankly I’m not sure all of the dealers I’ve spoken to, though helpful, are totally up tp speed on the machines.

I am going to use the tractor primarily for mowing app. 1.5 acres of very nice residential lawn (currently professionally maintained), snow removal (600' asphalt drive), occasional light landscaping (wood chips, beach sand, etc) and that’s about it. As you can see, I really don’t “need” a tractor. It’s more a matter of wanting a tractor for relaxation, fun, etc. (My wife can’t quite understand any of this but acknowledges that since I don’t gamble and don’t chase women I might as well do some other things).

The following issues have arisen. The dealer tells me that the 2210 uses a relatively newly designed 62 inch “convertible” MMM deck that has greater vacuum and clipping dispersal quality than the 60" deck (older technology?) which the 4110 uses. He feels the 62" deck will give a professionally manicured look. I don’t really think it will look as good as the people who do it now on their ZTR’s but I want it to look as sharp as I can manage. It is also slightly easier to attach and detach the 62" MMM as there is no need to disconnect the rear lift links which the 4110 uses.

I have looked closely at and crawled under the undercarriage of both. I an neither a mechanic nor an engineer but it seems to me that the 2210 has a 1 piece horizontal steel frame from front to back. The 4110 appears to be comprised of 2 or possibly 3 sections which seem to be bolted together. Is that correct or am I simply not understanding what I am looking at?

The 2210 FEL is slightly easier to take on and off. I have tried both. The 2210 has an improved system which does not entail use of the handle to disengage the latching. Also the 2210 front does not work the same as on the 4110. There is no front plate to line up. The dealer tells me that they have had some problems in the past where owners had some trouble matching the front plate up on the 4100 and 4110's. I had no problem at the dealer but, then again, those are typically the types of problems that occur on a Saturday just after the dealer closes for a long weekend and I am about to begin a project.

Overall it seems like the 2210 is more suited to my purposes and several dealers have so commented. The flip side is that the 4110 just has more of the “look” and “feel” of a tractor. I know that the fellows with the really big tractors are probably chuckling by now, but for me the 4110 is “big”. The tires, etc. just seem to give it more of a big tractor feel. (Remember we are only talking 1.5 acres so everything is relative.) For the purpose of this comparison I am leaving out the cost difference factor. It’s probably a one time deal so...

I appreciate your time reading this and any comments based on experience or otherwise. Thank you for the “sounding board"!

I own a 4100, and feel that it is better suited to heavier dirt work and rougher feild conditions. For your use, finish mowing is primary. I would go with the 2210 for your purposes.

After reading your post it sounds to me that you know which one you want. From what you stae you want to do sounds like the 2210 is the one /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was in the same "quandry" a couple months ago. After reading all the posts and reviews about 3 times over, I came to this a assesment (others may disagree):
If you primary use is mowing, go with the 2210
If you primary use is FEL work and the like, go with a 4XXX series

I mostly mow my yard (1 acre). I didn't need the extra size or weight for 75% of my applications. When I do, I can get extra weight put on (wheel weights, more balast etc..). I went the 2210 way.

Either way...you can't really go wrong with green /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had the same dilemma. I just oredered a 4010 w/FEL/54"MMM/R4's. Yes, what I really wanted was a 4110, 4115, TC24D, TC29D..., and I did consider the 2210, but the 4010 seemed to be the best value considering the the cost difference after adding HST to the 4110. There isn't a great difference in cost between the 2210 and 4010. My requirements are similiar to yours except it sounds like my lanscaping projects might involve moving a little more dirt around than what your looking to do. I'll gladly trade HP for traction and I figure the 4010 would win out here.

My driveway is about 500' asphalt and up a pretty good grade. After this winter where I cleared it sometimes 3 times in a week with a snowblower, I increased the importance of loader performance in my evaluation which pushed the decision in favor of the 4010 over the 2210.

I also keep in the back of my mind that I'll trade up in a couple years if I still feel I need more tractor. This also appeased my wife since she thinks it's just an expensive toy.

Russell,

As you are already using the 2210 mower, do you have any input as to the mowing quality? I realize you don't have a 4110, 60" MMM mower to compare it to but does it appear to provide as high quality a cut as my dealer claims (professionally manicured quality) or is that an exaggeration? BTW, I have been following the thread on the deck adjustment problems. I went out and tried to turn the knob. It took a LOT of effort to get it from the lock position to the 3 position. It appears that some adjustment is needed.

I am a rear-mount mower guy, as they are far easier to work
with. I can have mine on and off in a couple of minutes and
the JD 261 mower is so well balanced it is easy to maneuver
by hand.......BTW, I have owned both MMM and rear-mount.
The only MMM advantage I can see is possibly they do a slightly better mowing job, but with a rear-mount mower, you
can back it into nasty areas and not get bush-whacked ;-)

Walter,

Well I guess I'll go against most of the other replies here... GET the 4110!!! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
I just ordered mine two weeks ago (still waiting to get it /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) and I have just under 2 acres. I know I didn't need this big of a tractor and that my neigbhors are going to either laugh or be jealous BUT like you said this was a one time purchase for me and I really wanted something that looks and feels like a real tractor (ie not a riding mower)! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Now I'm not trying to insult anyone with smaller tractor here! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

For this is going to be a toy more than a tool /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif but I wanted this for so long that I just condln't pass up on the 4110!

Yes, I do. I've had it since April 7th. For such a large mower deck, it does an excellent job. I've cut my grass with my father's LX178 (with 38" deck instead of the standard 48") prior to getting the 2210, and I couldn't tell a difference. My yard isn't very flat, it still gives an even cut (which many large decks cannot claim).

I still need to adjust my deck (mine is off by 1/2" reads 3 but is 2-1/2). It's not a big deal. You have adjustments to make, you just need to take the time to get them right.

As far as the rear mower vs MMM removal. I can have my deck off in 2 minutes. The 2210 deck is a piece of cake to get off. It would take me longer to line up the 3ph than it would to get my mower deck off. Pull 2 pins, the PTO shaft, and the front carriage and it's done. Deere did a good job with that and the FEL quick-attachment setup.

If I didn't get the 2210, I would have probably gotten the 4115. I actually priced both, and decided the 2210 was the one. At first I was a little apprehensive about my choice. I was concerned that the 2210 might not be big enough (funny isn't it..I had a 12hp snapper for around the house and here I was concerned that a CUT woudn't be big enough /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif). As soon as I got it off the trailer and in the yard, I knew that it was the right choice.
