JD 2210 rough start

I have noticed that my 2210 will start rough if I start it at 1/4 throttle. It will misfire and puffs out a lot of diesel fumes for the first few seconds before cleaning up and running great. If I start at idle throttle setting it wakes up a purrs without missing a beat. Anybody have any ideas why that would be? Both of my diesel 332s love to start at 1/4 throttle, more so than at idle.
