Hi, I have a JD 2240 3 cyl 51pto hp with about 5600 hours. Uses no oil, and no blowby out the vent tube. Starts easily on only one battery, fires on two cyl's a few times when started cold, then purrs like a kitten. When hot, I get some black smoke at idle, and when you gun it. Seems to have lots of power and runs great other than that. So my question is, I'm thinking injectors...how about you???

I also have a 2240 (1980) with unknow hours. The meter stoped at 2860. I just recently purchased the new to me tractor. It is my first tractor. Please post your results after replacing the injectors as I am interested in the results.

Will do, but it will be around April.. I need it for snowblowing now. You have to pull the hood off to get at the injectors, other than that, looks pretty simple. If you need some injectors, you can get 3 new ones for about $101 including shipping from AC Motor Parts [ in Ill. ] on Ebay.. If the following link does not work, search for AR89564, the JDeere part #. Only took two days to get them in the mail. The ad on Ebay says the sale ends in 6 days, but that does not have to mean you can't get them at the same price later...

No problem. I'm suscribed to this link, so it will come up when anything new is posted.

Pulling the hood is easy. The front bolt on each side is a little tight though. I have mine off right now. I'm finishing rebuilding the power steering and have the cowl out being rebuilt as the bottom was rusted out from battery acid leakage. The machine looks pretty funny with no cowl or hood. John Deere wanted $1210 for a new cowl, so I had a shop I know cut the bottom off and replace it. I just got it back yesterday and they did a fantastic job. I don't expect to need to do injectors anytime soon, but you never know and the more I can learn about my tractor the better.

If you have your hood off, take a good look at the condition of the air intake tube going from your air filters to the intake manifold.. Mine was rubbed a little thin in spots and I wrapped the tube with friction tape to try to make it last longer. The hood moves around a little and rubs on the tube. Also a great time to back wash the radiator..... Gets a lot of stuff sucked into it over time...

I've looked at the rad hose and it's good, but flushing the radiator is a good idea. I'm going to move the tractor outside to presure wash under the cowl area before putting it back together. I may flush the rad too while it's outside.

There are a lot off 2240's and their brothers out there still chuggin... It is a pretty good sized tractor, lots of power and weight in a compact package. Last time I took my hood off, it was because I wanted to replace all the hoses and flush out the radiator... it was summer so I took my time and cleaned everything up like new. A lot of chaff/dirt gets past the screens and pack into the cooling vents in the radiator, and any hydralic leaks/fuel leaks just help cement the stuff in there... Good luck on your power steering, sounds like you are just about done with it..... Jerry

Nice looking tractor. Looks like its had a nice home indoors. Mine lived outdoors before I got it and is pretty faded. Is that a Hi/Lo or a Reverser?
