Well I had a blast yesterday using my brand new JD 2305 with the shaft driven JD47" snowblower. We live in Yarmouth, Maine and we had about 16" of snow to clear. My driveway is about 400 yards long. The ONE BUMMER with the whole setup is I was kind of "underwhelmed" at how far it was able to throw the snow. It was light, dry snow with was strong gusty winds. The problem was as I was clearing the snow I would change the direction of the chute left or right depending on how the wind was coming to keep it out of my face as much as possible. My driveway is not wide and if I was on the far right side I was having trouble clearing the driveway throwing the snow 15' to the far left so I do not have to come back and clear snow on the driveway I have already blown.

So the question is this....Should I be satisfied with this 15' throw distance? The whole rig with a 54" mower deck, blower and balast box was about $14,000. Is there anyway I can increase the throw distance? Are their better machines? Can I get an after market impellor or change the gearing?

I called the dealer and he said "that's the best you can get" and it's typical of may of the blowers. depending on the conditions that's all you will get.

I was running it at 540 PTO RPM so that's not the problem and I played with the deflector all day to try to get better throw distance. I love the rig but was expecting more throw distance.

Look forward to the ideas from the forum.

Chuck

20 feet, I would be happy with that.
Did it matter if you slowed down or not?

Mine does not throw much farther than that as well, I was not all that impressed with mine either. Do not know of any way to make it better.

conditions will make a difference, the light
fluffy snow we have gotten this week is so
light you can't really get any distance out of it.

another thing, you can always use a non stick
spray on the inside surfaces, esp the chute and impellar,
they help things move along with less friction.

you should notice that the best throw will be with the
spout turned 90 degrees to the right, which keeps the
snow moving with the impellar rotation, instead of
trying to reverse or change it's direction. If you can
do your driveway in the direction and throw to your right
every time, (yes, means backing up or going up empty)
you may find it throws a little better. and, keep the deflector
all the way UP!

I have had mine for about 6 years on my 2210, and it has done well. I think I am getting far greater distance than that. One thing to try is to keep the blower full. The fuller it is the farther it throws it. If you are going slow and not keeping as much snow in as possible you will notice the distance drop off. If you only have a few inches you will have to drive in high to accomplish this or it just kind of dumps it few feet. Something to try.

Already lots of good advice here. Non-stick, try to blow with the arc of the impeller, etc. The snow has alot to do with it, I find snow that is a bit sticky will throw alot farther than light fluffy stuff. Also, I find a blower stuffed full throws alot farther....... but there is a fine line between stuffing the blower full to get greater distance and stuffing it so full it bogs the motor down. Also....... could you increase the RPMs at all, even if it were a little over normal PTO speed?

Without doing advanced math the distance the snow is thrown is a function of the velocity that is imparted onto it by the impeller. The density of the snow is another factor. Here is a fact I picked up .How do they determine how much snow a real snowblower can throw. I watched a real front end loader driven into about 4 to 6" of water in the summer and the blower brought up to full power and the volume of water was measured by some method. What is the rule of thumb 12" of snow is 1" of water.
If you watch the videos of the mountain pass blowers they have 8' diameter wheels and I would have to look up my book about it. Fact. When they built the first one it broke the shaft and or veins or fins. It was rebuilt and the same ones have existed since then now powered by diesel, logs rocks anything will go through.

John Deere made a Single and a DOAL stage 47 Inch snowblower. The SINGLE stage should only throw it like 20 feet, but the DUAL Stage should throw it like 40 feet.

I have a Dual Stage 47 inch on my X475, and it throws the snow 45-50 feet easily. The harder I labor it, the farther it throws it.

I wonder if you have the single stage blower?

the single stages are 46",

I think for some reason the X700 series
tractors do have a little more throw
than the 2305, but I can't say why,
supposedly both turning 2000 rpm.

anybody had both that can comment?

I agree with non stick spray , and also with more snow in blower better for distance.
Sometimes doing a drive especially around parked cars or around a building I'll turn off PTO get driving forward till I get past car or where I can then blow out that snow.
You also will notice if snow is melting say out at edge of driveway. Spray non stick will help keep blower from clogging . Getting to your question I'm guessing 25' about max distance for mine.
I'll agree with spout to the right , If I'm doing my front yard very early in morning I'll drive along front yard and I can almost get snow to the other side of road. But if I go straight out of my drive and cross road it will only throw about 1/2 -3/4 across the road.
Still far nicer than plowing and a lot easier and quicker than using a shovel !!
One of the neighbors asked me about putting a clear plastic type liner in chute.
Just haven't taken time to try !!
