JD 2305 Hydro Whine - Normal?

Yep, absolutely normal, thanks to Hydrostatic transmission. Mine does it and at first scared the "you know what" out of me. But after 108 hours, it still whines and I'm almost used to it. One thing I have noticed is if you are in Hi and going slow, it whines louder. So I normally just stay in Lo since I don't use my tractor for speed laps around the pasture.
I second that. I just got a new 2320 and thought I had the brakes stuck on or the 4WD partially engaged etc. . .and was pushing to be sure it's in gear fully. It seems to be part of the program and not annoying once I figured out it was OK. And high gear at low speed is worse.

When I first got my 2305 I test drove a 790 and the 2305 and noticed that also. The 790 being manual had no whine which made the 2305 more noticable. Even hydro lawn tractors I've had make the same whine (maybe not quite as loud). The whine get's worse at low speed or under load.
All the responses are right though. Once you get used to it you won't even notice it.

I think it is probably nothing. My 2210 whined quite loudly especially when mowing when it was new. It also made some strange growling noises when idling hot. Now with 280 hours the noises are gone and I've grown accustomed to it's whining. You definitely want to do the 50 hours fluid and filter, and screen service for the hst, I had a lot of metal shavings in the screen. which is normal or at least common.
