I was bushogging with my 2305 (24hp) and hit a small pine limb (it did not choke out the tractor and it was a small limb). I began to hear a knocking so I shut the tractor down thinking something was caught in the mower. I couldnt see anything wrong so I fired it back up and mowed another 5 minutes or so and the noise persisted.

Brought the tractor back to the barn and noticed that the PTO spline coming out of the tractor appeared loose and a small bit of hydraulic fluid was leaking around it. If you grab it with your hand, you can move it from side to side.

I have read posts about the PTO shaft being too long, however I have used this mower for 3 years and have had no problems at all. I have hit bigger things (by accident) with no issue so this was a surpise!

Have I really messed the back end of the tractor up or is it simply a bearing or other small repair?? Can you shear a PTO spline?? Any help/opinions would be greatly appreciated!! I am not a mechanic so I hope I haven't caused a big $$ problem.

There are several hundred post on here about the casting being to thin to support the bearing. I think it's 2007 and earlier models. One guy said it was a $6000 dollar repair. Not to scare you in any way, but sounds exactly like others have described. I think there was even a class action law suite mentioned against JD over this design. Keep searching on here for rear PTO bearing failure. Hopefully I'm just spouting off and completely wrong. Best of luck. BV

I just looked back thru the post myself, after I read about this flaw a year ago, I put on a slip clutch. It's really scary considering its almost the cost of the machine to begin with - doesn't make much sense putting that much money into a tractor that will start having issues from normal wear anyhow. I haven't ever read a post on here that describes your symptoms and the owner found a fix. I read on here almost every day and would have ..... So sorry,

So is the 1025 brittle?

I am not sure i understand your question? What is the 1025?

I think it's pretty much the machine series that replaced the 2305

Think it's the 1026R, I have heard the bearing support wall is thicker. Same for 2305 2010-2012

I thought the problem had been fix starting with the 2008?

Ok now I'm terrified, I just put my woods tiller on the 2305 it was on my x485. But after having both knees replaced it's not the easiest taking the deck off and on. I just cut down my new pto shaft and tilled the garden the day this thread was written. I have a min of 2 inches gap on the end of the shafts. Measured with the tiller up and lowered, also has a slip clutch on it. Last year I did stall out the 485 when the tiller found a chuck of chain in the area I was tilling but nothing happened but dont want to take the chance with the 2305.
