John Deere 2305
I have a john deere 2305 that will fire and run for about 2 sec and quit. I believe it is a fuel problem, but can't pinpoint it. I have changed the filter, pushed the primer lever a 1000 times, disconected the fuel line in front of the injectors to try and bleed them with no luck. Manuel says the lines bleed automatic. I used the tractor and it was running fine then I parked it and when I went to use it again this is what happened. Ant help would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking I need a new fuel pump.

deerslayer6 - when have you been trying to start it? Have you tried it since above freezing?

Yes, it was about 15 deg when I first tried to start it, but now it is warm out. Today is 55 deg.

Make sure that your you have adequate fuel flow from the tank. Often the strainer at the tank outlet can clog

hmm Im wondering if it gelled - has it been below freezing at night lately?.. How many days has it been above freezing during the day? Did you treat the diesel fuel for winter?

IF the fuel gelled I dont know how long it would take at ambient temp to ungell.. Is the tractor in a barn/covered or out in direct sun? I am wondering if it has been out of direct sun that it may still be cold enough that the fuel is still gelled.

You can buy a POWER SERVICE Diesel 9-1-1 that is used to ungell fuel DIESEL 9?1?1® For Winter Emergencies: Winter Rescue Formula ? use to reliquefy gelled fuel and de-ice frozen fuel-filters.

good luck

I tried the 911 and when I changed the filter the sediment bulb filled back up pretty quick. The machine is outside in the sun and the last two nights have been above freezing. 60 deg out today and 55 deg yesterday. It is almost like after it starts it stops getting the fuel. I am going to drain the gas and put fresh stuff in today. I just put fresh in before this happened but maybe that was some bad diesel. I will try another round of new gas and see. Thank you for the help. I read something on an old post about a switch behind the fuse box if the new gas doesn't work I will try checking that.

When you say gas, you do mean Diesel right?

Yes diesel, I drained the tank and added new diesel, didn't work so I loosened the fuel lines at the injectors to make sure it was not airbound, no luck. The tractor starts for about 2 sec then quits. You can do this over and over but it won't keep running.

sounds like a trip to the service center?
I'm interested in the outcome/reasons - but of no help in diagnosing the problem.
let me know how it goes getting it on a trailer...

Ok I pulled the fuel selenoid out and turned the key on. According to the dealer service dept. the pin that sticks out should move in when the key is turned on. No movement there, so I tried starting the tractor with the selenoid out and the tractor started right up and kept running, yeah. Now I read something about a V4 diode or some other part that is probably the problem and not the selenoid. I haven't been able to locate this part any suggestions?

Thank you for the post. I have to work the next two days but am off Thurs. if the weather is good I will find that diode and check it before I buy a new selenoid. I couldn't find it, but I believe I will be able to now with the photo that the guy posted. Thank You so much! I will post my end results in a couple of days..

Well I tested the diode and it is ok. The test on the selenoid wasn't. Repair man at the dealer said to turn the key and with the selenoid plugged in, the pin should pull in. Sometimes it pulls in and sometimes it doesn't, but after about one second it comes back out. I started the tractor and it runs fine without the selenoid in. Only issue I might have is there was oil inside the selenoid. The repair man told me that there is a seal in the injector pump that keeps the oil out and that could be bad. The good news is I found a new selenoid on ebay for $38.00 instead of $180.00 that the dealer wanted. Hopefully this will end my problem. Thank you to everyone for the help. You saved me a lot of money and it is greatly appreciated.

Well Ijust put the new selenoid in, but tractor still does the same thing so back to square one I guess. Tractor runs fine without the selenoid in, not sure what to even check now.

I would say you have narrowed it down to being an electrical problem. In that you do not have enough voltage for the hold in for the fuel shutoff solenoid. In the first post referenced this person said -- looked through the schematics again and found that V7 Diode appeared to be the same one and it just powered the Hazard Flasher. I located V7 two up from the V4 and verified its wire colors (Red, Red, Green/White), removed it an put it into the V4 socket and everything worked fine (except the hazard lights)! --

I know you said you tested the diode, but I suggest you swap the V7 and V4 diode. I know a diode is easy to test, but it cannot hurt to try this.

Looking the wiring diagram in the second post if it was a safety switch problem, most likely it would not have started.

sound very much like ignition switch or fuel shot off solenoid? gets fuel when cracking but as soon as you let off the key shot off closes and it cuts fuel? test light on fuel shot off might do you some good.

sorry I did not read the links on JD 5210's post before I posted I believe he put you headed the right way. let us know what the problem was once you get it fixed...might help the next guy, what ever you do don't start just changing parts hunting for a problem, most times this cost more than sending to the dealer.
