Are you saying all that needs to be removed to get at the zerk?

jriffe108, what are those gray looking about a half dozen wires in the first photograph?

Been,

Yes, that is the only way to get grease into that zerk. There is no access from underneath, I tried everything.

Now, after removing the entire upper and lower dash assembly and floorboard, which required removal of the brake pedals, hst pedals, diff lock rod, mower height knob, and rockshaft flow knob, I will probably cut a hole in the lower dash and use an extension to my grease gun.

By the way, engine crank nut is 19mm and is very easy to turn.

Big,

The grey colored wire assembly is for the thermocouples to my water temp and oil temp gauge.

Yes sir, thank you. It has worked flawlessly and has kept me informed :)

you don't have to take the whole dash off to get the floor off. If you take the upper dash loose you can lift it up enough to take the lower dash out. You can get to the aft zerk without disassembling anything from below but the front one is the one that requires disasembly(just the lower dash, not the floor). I have considered cutting a access panel in the lower dash so I can get to the other access panel so I can grease the front joint without pulling EVERYTHING apart.

Scrappy, I didn't want to fight with floorboard and the lower dash trying to hold or wedge them back while fitting a grease gun in there.

I wanted to remove everything just to see how much time it took and aggravation.

I left the access panel off because I don't see a need to have it on there. I will cut a hole in the lower dash to access the front zerk.

I didn't want broken plastic tabs by trying to work around everything. I recommend removing the entire upper and lower dash along with floorboard for the first service when removing the access plate. Then, leave the plate off and use a holesaw or dremel out an opening in the lower dash panel once you see where it lines up.

Jriffe108,

How much time did it take you to remove everything to get to the access door. I will be doing this maintenace and dred the fact that I have to remove a lot of things from the machine to do this.

T-Bow, it takes me about 3 hours to remove the floor, pull back the skirt, and grease the Zerk and put it all back together. Of course, I have done it several times over the years, and that time includes a couple of cold ones to keep me cool and collected and not yell  to much at the dumb designer who overlooked this important maintenance point.

Tbow,

Approximately 2 hours if undistracted. It's not really hard to do but time consuming. The hardest part for me was disconnecting the parking brake and cruise control assemblies to enable full removal of the lower dash.

Once you fully disassemble and remove the access plate, you may be able to only loosen the lower dash assembly and still reach the zerk.

I will include pics when the finally cut an access hole for the lower dash. I haven't decided whether to just holesaw it or actually cut a square opening. The hole needs to be right at the edge of the dash panel which will weaken it a little and will require a long shaft to access the zerk.

I will search for a rubber grommet plug that is suitable size to keep it clean.

Jriffe108 and BigD9,

Thanks for the information. Now I know that it shouldn't take me all day to do this.

Jriffe108, please post what you cut on the lower dash when you do this so I can see if I want to follow your lead of just remove a lot of stuff next time.

I have a 2320 made last September. I dont need to take the floor off. I just need to remove the throttle and remove the ten screws that hold the upper and lower plastic dashboard shrouds. I can then get at the metal access plate and get to the zerk with a thin grease gun tip I had to bend. I imagine next time I can grease the front u-joint in a half hour. Here is a link to my post from last week. http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/2761271-post50.html

PS: Apparently there may be different procedures depending on your model year. Good luck

What was JD thinking when they slopped this together? When was the last time you greased a U joint on a car?
