i recently purchased a 2005 jd 235 and a 44" snow plow for it right away. the first snow i tried to plow without chains or weights. didnt work to well. so i went to valley ag and bought 5 suitcase weights for the rear and tire chains. now it plows. did anyone ever hear about putting a piece of pvc pipe on the bottom of the blade when plowing a stone drive way. so the stones dont get plowed up. i am very pleased with my new 235. does anyone else plow with theres.

I saw one on eBay today that had ski-like runners on each end to keep it off the gravel.

Welcome! I usually wait until the first 5-6" of snow to fall. Then I go out and drive/pack the snow down in my stone driveway with my pickup or my wife's car. If no more snow falls on top of it, the driveway will harden/freeze over within a 8 hour period. This will keep your driveway stone down where it belongs.
I live in Northeast Ohio and we receive a lot of lake effect snow, so this is something I do to my driveway every winter. I have a Toro Wheel Horse 520XI garden tractor with a 48" front blade. I have Ag tires with chains and 50 lb. wheel weights on the rear. I use to just leave my Turf tires on with chains and wheel weights. But, I found that the Ag tires have a lot better traction then the Turf tires.

The PVC is a good idea.
I have a snowthrower on my 225. I have a paved yard, except for a crushed stone drive up to my storage shed. I usually have to wait and pack that before I dare run the snowthower over it, otherwise is turns into a "rock chuckah." /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have not plowed with your combination, but I have plowed with an x595 John Deere and 54" front blade. I can say that it was most impressive. With a 2wd tractor such as yours mounting ballast and chains will allow you to plow most things. I am very happy you enjoy your machine. To me, the common thought that bigger is better is not always correct. When I was a kid I used to plow most of the drives in our neighborhood for spending money. We would have about four snows per year of usually between four and six inches. The was a fellow down the road from us that plowed with a good sized farm tractor and a rear blade, and I at the time had an 8123 12 hp Gravely with a 48" blade. Even with manual angling, I could plow three drives to one for the other guy. It was the front blade and the added manuverability that made the difference. Good luck and enjoy that plow.

I have a 245 with a 48" plow. I run chains on turfs and 150# of weight, plus me (180#), and it goes where it wants to. I'm very pleased. It nicely compliments a walk-behind snowblower.
