Well... the pounds of tension at the twine disc or wire disc is likely to be quite a bit higher than the 70-100lbs for the twine baler. That would merit the use of a roller in the needles to 1.) counter the increased wear that the wire would create 2.) better ease the movement of the wire into the knotter assembly.

One possible issue that I could imagine using twine with the roller-needles would be the lower tension on the twine might allow the twine to "wander" side to side, outside of the roller face and pinching between the roller and the side of the needle. Might bind and/or fray the twine.

Thanks Akfish, I believe the 70 to100 lbs is applied at point where it come out of the twine disk by adjusting the twine holder. Your point about the twine fraying is a concern. The bearing hub race is wider somewhat and it the twine was to get in between the bearing and the needle it would surely snap. Maybe I could fill in the gaps using thin washers. Or there is a better way.

Searching the web, I found the answer to my question.

The rollers are not supposed to turn in twine balers. They are used because they are harder than the cast needle and act only as guide and wear surface. Now when they get a little worn, twine will be caught between the sides of the roller and needle and cause you lots of stress!

makes sense to me
thanks to all for your help

Very good posts. I have a 346 wire tie baler. It does a very good job except I have constant problems with the wire jumping out of the needle. I'm afraid to adjust the needles too much as the knotters are working very well. I'm using brand new wire and it's causing me to bale twice as much as needed due to broken bales because one side or the other doesnt catch the needle after it's tied.

Does anyone have any thoughts? Maybe I'm stringing the wire incorrectly. I don't have a book to go by.

If the needles are missing the wire(IE not carrying the wire to twister hooks) then it's more than likely missing the wire under the bale case from the needles being adjusted too high or the wire guide is off to one side a little. If the knotters are miss tying very many bales then something needs adjusted or replaced. I will suggest you get an operators manual.
