jd 2520 wheels wont turn going uphill?

hello my 2520 going up my driveway with snow and ice .will either spin or the tires wont turn at all.whining noise not nough power?pedal hard to keep floored.this tractor cant be that underpowered can it.i have a fel and a ballast box with rocks in it.other from that i really am impressed with the tractor.thanks in advance /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Is your engine at full rpm?
Are you in low range?
Diesels, especially those with hydros are designed to run at full rpm.

High range is for moving the machine from one place to another.

Yep, sounds like you are over-loading the HST (assuming you have HST) and running in high gear. If so, look closely at the manual for how to operate it.

High gear would be my guess too, unless something seriously wrong.

Mowed about 1/2 of a neighbor's 5 acre lawn last summer and kept wondering why I was having such a hard time on one steep area (same symptoms...wheels barely turning or wanting to spin). After a break, I got back on and went through normal routine of brake, seatbelt, gear (OH, so THAT's what was wrong...). Felt like a fool. I'd driven down to the neighbor's in high range, lowered rpm and the rear mower, engaged the PTO and off I went /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif. Hopefully won't make that mistake again.

The new e-hydros wont let that happen. The electronics sense the overload, and back off on the speed so the engine torque stays up.
I admit to doing that this morning when plowing snow, and didn't remember it was in high (3rd range). Turned around to head back up hill, and sensed losing power which for a moment was puzzling. Then I looked and saw it was in 3, not 2nd gear. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Don't often do that anymore, but it will happen again.

If Beenthere is referring to LoadMatch, then (on my 3320) that is a selectable option. If you want to use that feature then make sure it is on. Switch on the dash is how mine turns on/off. Check your manual for instructions on the 2520 if it is not also on the left hand side of the dash. Also adjust the range.

Somethings not right here I have a feeling that it isn't going into low range when you move the shift lever from high to low. The linkage has a spring loaded detent ball and you should be able to feel it lock or "pop" into neutral and low when shifting from high range.

It could also be a broken part like the fork or arm that gives you the correct feel when you shift but in reality it is doing nothing inside to shift the transmission into low range.

Do you notice a difference in speed (low will roughly be about half as fast) between high and low range on flat ground

The 2520 has 26.5hp and 50 ft.lbs of torque thich is 6.5 hp and 13 ft.lbs of torq less than my 430 which weighs about 300 or 400 lbs less. My 430 with R1 tires will flat bury itself "deep" on hard ground if I hang up on a tree root pulling my box blade in low range and differential locked with the scarifers down. Time to get the pickup and pull it out......again /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

One other thing that hasn't been mentioned on these threads is, exactly how steep is that grade, the number of feet of rise in elevation per 10 feet of length. This could be a factor too.

Just trying to eliminate the grade here because if it is a mechanical problem like a broken linkage or bad releif valve, and operator error is ruled out, it's time to get it to the dealer while it's under warrenty and get it fixed so you can get that warm fuzzy feeling about your pride and joy.

I do hope you get it sorted out soon, the 2320 or 2520 is my planned purchase next spring if I get my 430 sold this winter.

The pedal is a gear shift lever not an accelerator.

hi everyone.i thank you all for the replies i havent had a chance to try my tractor uphill yet.unfortunetly i had shoulder surgery on monday /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif its painful cant even move my arm for another 3 weeks .i cant wait to get back on my 2520.i only have 6 hours on it.this sucks but at least i have something to look foward to.i got rear tire chains for my jd.that should help with the ice situation.cant wait to use it.ill let you all know how i made out in a few weeks /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
