I would like to install the kit on my 990 as the parts book shows basically the same kit but would like to know what keeps the stack from moving around as you can not get to any bolts? Also what size hole saw do you need? I have the same problem as to eating fumes and making the loader arms and weight black. Thanks Eric

If you look under the hood of your tractor you will see the molded indexes for the hole. It will give the size or you can measure it. If I remember correctly, the instructions will also tell you what size hole to drill. The edges of the hole will be covered by a rubber ring that comes in the kit.

You will remove the exhaust from where it bolts onto the header and bolt the new tubing back on. The top of the new tubing is cone shaped. The exhaust stack will drop down over the cone after the hood is closed and be located by a ridge on the cone. The stack just sits there. It is not bolted down. It does not need to be. Mine has been on for over 170 hours and has never come off by itself. As dirtworksequip has said however, you need to remove it a few times a year or it will jam and start to rust itself down and become very hard to remove. So far I have not had that trouble.

You will have a choice of 4 directions point the top bend of the stack to. I think most of us point it off to the left but it is up to you.

Very easy to put on. You need to be aware that most of the hoods are used on more than one model and will be marked in more than one place or have different size markings under the hood. Just be SURE you are drilling in the right place with the right size hole saw. Once you cut the hole it is forever.

Do these kits leave the factory muffler, or is there a muffler in the stack? Chrome strait pipe would look so sweet!!

They leave the factory muffler on the engine. You would have to keep the cone at the bottom of the stack if you went to chrome. That would, of course, require pictures.

I would have thought the 990 vertical stack comes out the side like my 790. On mine, it comes out of an opening in the engine side cover then turns up. No holes in the hood that way. Where does your existing 990 exhaust route?

I think you may be right about the routing of the exhaust. I checked the catalog and it looks like it may come out of the side.

According to the parts manual on the 990 there is a serial # break @590001. It looks like the older units have the stack come out the side panel and the newer units like mine come through the hood. There was also a muffler change with the advent of the 4tnv84 engines as far as I can read. Hope somebody could clarify.

Interesting. Does the new engine coincide with the serial number break as well? Come to think of it, the 3005 (new 790) has an underslung exhaust. Perhaps the newer engines have a different manifold layout?

OK guys I looked under my 990 hood and there are no indexes marked for the hole. Anyone out there with a 2004-up 990 do this and did the kit come with some sort of template? Last night I went out to scrape the ice off the driveway and the wind was just so that all I could smell was the fumes. I guess that does not bother me as much as thinking about mowing this year for 2-3 hours @ 2700 rpm and smelling fumes when I should be enjoying the smell of fresh air and cut grass.

Hey ejb, the vertical exhaust is no cure-all. I still get my share of diesel smell on my 790 with vertical. On top of that, the stack seems to end right at ear height. If I don't wear my radio-headphones I get ringing in the ears after a couple hour mowing session.

Of course, I wouldn't trade it for anything!
