Joe,
Thanks for clarifying the year, I might have known that a long time ago. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I got mine over 10 years ago, and rebuilt/replaced bearings, so I first thought it was that. I will try a JD-original belt as the easiest next step and again re-check everything as I do the install. I am going right by the manual every step, so yes belt tension was with the deck up. I can't say if the issue started with a change to non-JD belts or not, but if the answer is that easy, I'm in!

Can't speak to the 300 series but the 216's were famous for flipping over if the tensioner wan't lined up properly

I had a 212 that was doing the same thing. The pulley was great but Deere used a smaller plastic piece inside the pulley to narrow the shaft down. These wore out after years of use and replacing them on the tractor and the deck made all the belts stay put.

Any chance you still have the belt part number? I have the same 1978 316 and have tried an 88" goodyear belt with no success. any help would be great. thanks for your time

Sorry Slowsmoke, I don't. I sold that mower a couple years ago and the manuals went with it. The real JD belt was the answer for me, try you local JD shop.
