Question for you guru's out there:

When turning the steering wheel of the 318 all the way to where the wheels lock out, is a slight bit more turn (1/8th or so) in the steering wheel normal? It does turn a little more and seems to stress the hydraulics when you try. Should the wheel be at a dead stop when the wheels stop turning, or is a little more play normal? Someone suggested that this meant there was something wrong with the steering, likely bad seals in the hydraulic steering cylinder.

Thanks for your responses!

I wouldn't think anything particularly wrong.. but I would not be pushing the hydraulics against a dead stop.. may just be what stresses the seals so whoever suggested a problem, caused it to happen. ;)

Someone else may chime in that knows better too.

Well nothing happened when he did it that I'm aware of... it's just that he suggested that it meant something was wrong with the seals or something.

I'm of the opinion that the hydraulic steering has a longer "stroke" than the distance to the wheel lock out. Therefore the steering wheel would turn further. If the hydraulics had a shorter stroke, you'd bottom out the piston before the wheel lock and any force against the wheels (and thus the steering) would be applied to the piston and rod that was already bottomed out.
