The geometry of the loader arms and cylinder attachment points also has something to do with it. Because the leverage changes as the loader lift arms pivot up, many loaders have more lift capacity at ground level than they do at full height. For example, the lift curve on my 4100 shows about 1400 lbs at the ground, but falls off to about 800 lbs at full height.

I have experienced this in actual use where the loader can only lift a load a foot or two off of the ground and not any higher.

MessickFarmEqu & JerryG are in fact correct with regards to the technical aspect of my post.

However, from the laymans point of view, I stand by my answer as easy to understand for most people. The HP of the tractor could be 20 or 24 or even 30 and that would have virtually nothing to do with the lift capacity of the loader. The hydraulic system, in total, is really the issue. I was simply trying to explain, in very simplistic terms, that you can't look at the HP and use that to determine the capabilities of the loader.

ALSO, and this relates to ballast, I know many people who swear by filled rear tires and mow their lawn. I am one of them. I do agree that a box blade is ALSO good, but it is not good enough on its own, so if you skip the rear filled tires, then you have to add some sacks of sand, concrete blocks, or some other weight. But the weight of a box blade is not enough as a safe ballast. R4 tires, filled with fluid, work and they don't tear up a lawn unless the ground is soft enough that you shouldn't be on it anyway. Just my opinion, but my yard doesn't have ruts. . .

Lots of good advice, especially about the $14k being a little high. Checked out the price of new 4110/410FEL,60"midmower, turf tires and got a price of $15,650. For that little difference better to go new rather than a 4year old machine. Another dealer had a used 4100 with same set up coming in on a trade in 2-3 wks for $11,500. Said the loader cylinders were leaking and they would put a new kit on them. Now we come to the real question: another dealer about 75 mi. from here has a 4310 w/60 hrs, ehydro, 420 FEL for $16,500 and a 1 yr warranty left. Sold it new to the guy last year. Apparently the previous owner has a trailer park and bought more land to expand the park and got a commercial machine with backhoe to do more work. Have checked this site and see where some are not fond of the 420 FEL for this tractor but most like the 4310. Since I'm new to all of this, what info should I ask for from the dealer so you can help, or am I getting too big? I will find out what tires it has, don't think it has a mid PTO because when I asked if it had the 60" mid deck he said no but he could get me into a rear finish mower for $600, but will ask. As I said earlier I finish mow the yard with a 620 ztrac and have another 5 acres I mow 3-4 times a year and will eventually clear more of the remaining 75 that are Ozark woods.
