Backhoe JD 410C shifting problem

Tractor is stuck in forward. Neutral if in forward. Trying to put it in reverse causes the engine to labor.
I have been told its a stuck valve and the tractor needs to be split to resolve the problem.
My problem is finding someone to work on it. JD dealer 35 miles away wants $1000 each way to haul it to their store and an open checkbook after that.
Is there anything I can try myself and could anyone tell me exactly what I am faced with. Sure would appreciate any help.

Have you tried changing the fluid and filter?

Do you have a repair manual and parts manual for it? If you plan to do any work on it yourself, you'll need to start there.

Thank you. I have not changed the filter and fluids. I have an operators manual only.
I could handle the fluid change if that would work but I am a little long in the tooth for major repair. I keep getting different answers as to the real problem and would at least like to know what the problem really is. If it is possible with my limited discription.

I suggest to check shifter linkage to be sure it's attached correctly & is operational. Also check pressures on reverser control valve.

I did check the linkage and it seems to be operating as it should. After this started it did work perfect again for a bit, then failed.

It's possible the gasket in the photo I posted has failed allowing hyd pressure where it shouldn't go.

Jim, I think you hit on something about the shifter linkage. It is very sloppy but I tried adjusting it and reverse was now neutral. More adjusting and its back to reverse is sill forward. But it did change for the better so I am going to explore that more.

Older JD BH's have a history of faulty reverser linkage but I was guessing on your model.

Don't know the exact year but its older. Wonder if any parts are still available?

Due to the number of units produced I'll guess most parts are available. 410C was produced '86-'90
