I ran across a JD 4110 with a 78” loader mounted snowplow. Is this too much plow for this tractor?

I built a FEL snowplow for my 4110 last fall. I cut a 84" plow down to 60". I kind of wish I would have tried it wider before I cut it, because the loader/tractor handles it fine. The concerns with a wider blade would be the stress it would put on the loader frame, the weight, and it might tend to push the tractor to the side when angled. I don't have any of these problems with my blade. So to answer your question, I don't know! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Is this a homemade setup or professional?

78" sounds way to wide for my liking, I also built a FEL mounted snow blade, and also cut mine down to 60". The torsional forces on the loader arms sounds like it would be excessive at 78".

The regular plow blade(not FEL mounted) that JD offers for the 4110 is only 54".

It's a Meyers plow made for tractors

I don't think it is. I have a 20 hp Gator diesel upon which I have mounted a 6' plow for snow. It does fine, even up steep hills, etc. This plow is geared specifically for snow, though, not for gravel or dirt of any weight. I think you would be fine with your sized tractor and that sized plow as long as you do not care about plowing or grading gravel or hard pack with it. For snow only, it would likely do fine.

I have the JD 54" blade that I bought with my 4110. I curved
a piece of 3/16" X 24"X 72" hot roll steel; and put it on the face of the 54" blade. Put 1/4" X3" cutting edge on the bottom.
I used the set-up for two winters and have had no trouble.
The 4110 seemed to handle it well. I did add 120# of weight
on the front to keep from being pushed side ways. It will push
a good bit of snow. Would not recommend trying to grade
with it. It does handle snow plowing chores quite well.
Just my experience with my 4110 plowing snow.
Good luck with your project.

I thought so too, but wasn't sure, so I thought I would ask. Considering the 4110's size, I was thinking 60" would be about right.

I still think you could go wider if you are wanting to use for snow. Bear in mind you will probably angle the blade too, so you will not be getting the full amount of plow width. That extra 1.5 feet might come in handy if you have a lot to plow.

Mouse,
FYI, HERE is the post that has my project detailed, as well as a link to the hydraulics I added to the FEL.

I still think it is a homemade setup, I am pretty sure Meyers does not have any factory applications for tractors.

John,
While I would agree that the Gator or the 4110 could possibly handle a 78" blade, but only when they are FRAME mounted, Not mounted out on the loader arms. There is just to much leverage involved with the plow that far in front.

Elad,
Your 72" blade modification sounds good, but keep in mind that your setup is FRAME mounted, not FEL mounted.

How did you have the back of the tractor ballested?

   / JD 4110 snowplow #11
The back of the tractor has calcuim & tubes in the rear tires.
Also have 96lbs. of wheel weights on each rear wheel. There
is also a 6' rear JD blade hanging on the back. I think that is why I needed the added weight on the front. I felt it was a
better deal to go frame mount instead of FEL. With the work and expense of building a FEL blade plumbing valves etc. not
to mention the possible damage to the FEL. I have $1250 in
the complete set up. I thought that was reasonable for what
I have to plow snow. I hope I did not muddy the water by
mentioning my frame set up.

Not at all, all input is welcome here on TBN /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I just wanted to clarify the difference to the original poster between your setup and the question of a loader mounted blade.
Sounds like you have a nice setup, I wish JD would make a wider blade for this size tractor, the 54" is way to small IMHO.

I don't now for sure as I haven't seen it yet, just going by what I was told.

I had no idea if Meyers had a setup for tractors, but it appears they do.

Egg /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif no, not at all, we can’t keep up with everything, we’d need bigger heads. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I agree as they have it listed under their “New Products” tab.
