JD 420 Transmission slows down under load in high gear

I dont know if this is normal for the 420's but I have to keep holding the speed lever up when pulling. If I let go of the lever the tractor will slow down. This happens in higher gear and not so much in low.

If you're referring to a 420 L&G then I'll bet the friction device on trans control is bad(loose). I think the friction device is the shock absorber but I could be mistaken. If it's a 420 2 cyl. then the throttle friction disk needs tightening.

It's the 420 garden tractor. How do can I determine if the friction device is causing the problem?

Is the speed control handle moving closer to "N" while lawn tractor is in motion?????????????

Then just as I stated the trans control handle needs the friction device tightened up so handle can move as easily!!!!!!

What am I looking for to tighten? In the diagram which numbered part is it?

The diagram I posted possibly isn't the correct one as IIRC there are 4 different photo's possibilities depending on machine serial number.

In the diagram posted, item 13 is the nut to tighten. Items 15 are the friction discs. The other setup for other serial numbers looks different, but it is the nut where the lever pivots.

Thanks for clarifying. I have no hands on experience with this model but knew something added friction. What's the function of the shock absorber?
