Hello,
I have a JD 4200 with brake problems. As it is fully hydro, the brakes are rarely used except for steering when I use it to clear snow in the winter. It gets driven on the side of the road quite a bit (northern Michigan) so picks up salt from the road. Last year the brakes started sticking on when used. All of the exposed linkage is clean and lubed. Something is binding in the trans. Tried to get some lube in there thru the shaft seals where the brake shaft comes thru the trans case but didn't work. Any ideas without pulling the trans case apart?

The 4200 is about the same as my 4400. There are springs that are prone to rust and then breaking, which will cause the brakes to drag. Are you certain both springs are in good shape? Pretty easy to see when you get under the machine.

Welcome to TBN:D

Wayne is 100% correct about the brake return springs, also the shaft can corrode where they go through the axle housing. Liberal dosing of Fluid Film or PB Blaster helps with this.

That's it. There is only an O-ring to seal that shaft and it is half way
between the inner and outer sides of the axle housing. The housing is
aluminum and the shaft is steel. Add salt and water and you have
lots of friction, esp with infrequent use.

Had the same problem with my 4200. Get some PB Blaster and a large set of channel lock pliers. Apply the PB Blaster to the shaft and rotate the shaft back and forth with the channel locks. It will take a while but they should free up. Mine did.

I think I have this problem as well, the left brake is stuck and the linkage seems fine. The return spring was missing on the left side, so maybe that contributed to the problem. Although the shaft through the housing will not rotate, it does slide in and out about 1/8 of an inch freely (just like the right side). Would that indicate that it is not corroded and something else is wrong? Or, maybe that type of movement is a completely different touch point than the corrosion touch point.

there is a second return spring up under the dash on the top of each pedal, they were bad to break and allow the brakes to stick

Thank you Joe C Deere.

I've replaced the rear spring on the left side and took off the plastic side panel so I could get a better look at the linkage area at the top of the brake pedals. There is a notch formed by both pedals that allows the end of the linkage to sit into it by gravity. The two pedals were not aligned correctly, and so the notch was too narrow for the end of the linkage to properly drop into place. This prevented, at least partially, the left brake from releasing fully. So I fixed that too. Now, with everything back together the way it should be, the brake still does not release. I should say that the shaft going through the axle housing does turn properly and release properly.

I'm concerned that over time, the wear on the left brake from not fully releasing has caused an internal problem - I've no idea really.

I'd appreciate any other advice, I hope I don't have to tear into the axle housing to see what is going on.

Kind Thanks!
