JD 4200 HST
Hey anyone out there to help me. I'm going along brushhogging today, tractor running like a friggin champ! Suddenly and without warning, the engine just cut out. Not like starving for fuel cut out, mean as if shut off the key cut out. Now it will not even turn over. I shut off all PTO's and bypassed the seat switch and still nothing. the lights, and all ignition work, just not even a turnover.

any thoughts

sounds electric, may the thermistor? last time my thermistor was bad, my engine at least tried to turn. this acts as if I have a saftey cut off switch stuck

thanks

Sounds like a safety switch to me too. If you have the service manual, you can locate those switches and test them individually. If I read your post correctly, you've already isolated the under seat switch.

However, do the easiest thing first and try to jump start using a known good battery (after checking your cables for good connections).

If that doesn't start the tractor (or, at least get the starter turning), start the electrical trouble shooting. If your 4200 has HST, I believe there should be a switch at the pedals too.

Electrical troubleshooting is a real PITA. I'll be the first to admit, I'm not too good at it, but I do wish you the best of luck!

Check for unplugged wires as well. I haven't had any electrical issues with my 4200 but my Toro mower quit a few weeks ago, one of the safety switch connectors came unplugged...stopped it cold. Do you have a tech manual?

Okay I found out the problem. It only took a month, 160.00 dollars and much cussing but it turned out to be only a 10amp interlock system fuse that was blown.

at first, i check and bypassed all saftey switches(under seat, PTO rear and mid) and I bypased after testing successfully the neutral position cut off switch. I rechecked the battery charge 100%. I read here on this site and ordered and replaced the fuel solenoid. Had my old one tested and it worked just fine. I bought and soldered in a new thermistor and still a no go. Finally, I went back and started all over again from the beginning. I rechecked the fuse panel and heard a loud clicking fromt the panel. I removed one fuse at a time and found the 10am interlock system was blown. My manual did not describe the interlock system or what it does. I blogged here and found my exact problem and replaced the fuse. I can't believe it started right up without any problems. I feel like such a dumb ***.
Since the fuel cut off solenoid seems to fail alot on these tractors, I'm glad i at least replaced this as well.

Next time, I will stick to one of my life's rule: "Common things happen commonly"

Thanks for posting the solution to the problem. Will keep that in mind if the 4300 shows the same symptoms. Good that you were able to finally chase it down, and prolly learned more about your tractor than you really wanted to know.
