All 3 variations of JD 4240's have 12 volt electrical systems
Easy to confirm. Measure from positive to ground on each battery. If one reads 6 volts and one 12, it's a 12 volt system and has to be charged across the two series batteries.
Not really. If you read from positive to negative on each battery both would read six volts. However if you read from the positive of one to the negative of the other it should read either 12V or 0V if they are series connected. In a series connection the positive of one battery is connected to the negative terminal of the other.
I agree with KennyG. Measuring voltage positive to ""ground"" as he stated isn't the same as measuring positive to negative on each battery.
Agree. Ground is not necessarily negative on a multi battery system. I could have been more clear on my statement.
