JD 425
I have had my 425 for just over a year now. I purchased it used from a JD dealer and have been very happy with it. I recently added a Johnny Bucket Sr. front end loader and have been extremely happy with the utility.

Just last week I noticed a puddle of hydraulic oil underneath the left rear axle. I'm not able to see up under the rear body panel and frame to isolate the leak. Does this sound like something I should just take it into the JD dealer to isolate and fix or should I try and take a crack at it myself? Is the rear body panel easy to remove?

Thanks in advance...I love my John Deere!

I'm guessing since you put the bucket on you have been using the diff lock more. There is a bushing on it that works out and could be your problem. The seat pan come off pretty easy. 1 screw either side of seat and 2 bolts from pan to foot rest on each side. It's awkward but not too bad to lift off. Follow your diff lock linkage back to where it goes into transmission. Great little tractor. Welcome to TBN.

The diff lock seal is a rubber doughnut. Some people have been able to push the seal back in by reaching up in there with a long screwdriver without disassembling anything. It will be a lot easier if you remove the seat and the seat pan and lift the fuel tank off and set it on the foot rest. There is a breather in the top of the transmission that can pop off and the o rings on the shaft that that the forward reverse pedals link to can leak. There is a good thread on MTF about rebuilding the transmission.

Hi Chris - Thanks so much for the info....looks like I have a project for this weekend. I'll give it a whirl and post back with my findings!

Here is a schematic from jdparts showing that rubber seal (item#34), if it helps your project.
Removing the fenders will give you a chance to clean the diff. from oil and dust as it is a place where a lot can accumulate. Helps to keep the hyd. fluid cooler when operating.

Finally got around to this and it appears that I got lucky as it was excess fluid weeping out the breather from being over filled. I had added some fluid after installing the JBSr and I guess I added too much. Thanks again to you all for the responses!
