First time TBN member, just in case you couldn't tell by the end of reading this :)
So, my story begins with my 2000 JD 425 (non-AWS) with 261 hours on it. No rear or front PTO. 54 deck.
I've only owned it for the past 4 months. I recently had an issue with it running rough and after several attempts at a fix, I finally found the push rod from right-hand cylinder and had fallen from under the rocker-arm. Replaced it and off I went.
Back to the point. I've developed a leak from under the rear differential. I would say it's leaking about 1 ounce a week but causing enough of a stain on my garage floor that I have to take action. Yes, I started to put something under it to catch the leak.
I can't really get to the left side very well as there's little room to operate. I've cleaned the right-hand side but can't really see a blatant leak anywhere. I'm just not sure where it's—´ coming from. The left side is an oily-grassy mix so pinpointing the leak is almost impossible.
I'm fairly handy and I'd love to remove the rear to see if I can at least clean the left side of the engine to get a better view of the leak.
I've called the dealer and they're offering a fair deal - ½ hour labor to look at it and then go from there.
Here's the thing they're two weeks behind and I'd love to do it myself but don't know how. I see the main 4 bolts holding the rear to the frame and I believe the drive-shaft is fairly easy to come out. But I believe hydraulic lines are also connected to the rear so I'm not sure what to do with those.
Let me also add that after reading several posts, I don't know what a swash plate is or any of the other terms associated with the rear-end, but I'm sure willing to learn.
So, there's my predicament. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated. I've searched for posts regarding pulling the rear, but none complete enough for me to get started.
Thank you for your time.

shoot me your email and I'll send you a PDF of the Deere Tech manual for that model. I'd start off by reading through that section of the manual before I just started removing bolts!

I have yet to start - still reading (and trying to identify the proper parts).
Question:
Are the hydraulic lines coming into the transaxle charged? Under pressure?

Also, is disconnecting the driveshaft from the transaxle as easy as removing the two bolts that connects the universal joint to the transaxle?

Much appreciate your time!

I have a 430 that has a leak took a long time but finally see some hairline cracks in the alum case. On the 430 there is a bolt that helps keep the transaxle from rotating my case was cracked there. I took apart and welded the case, slowed it down but still leaks, really hard to weld alum when it has ben contaminated with oil. Was not that difficult to take apart and fix.

Thanks BB for information.
Any idea on those hydraulic lines coming into the transaxle (just above the filter)? Are they under pressure or can I just loosen them and disconnect them?
Thanks,

Perhaps I'm not being clear - my only concern with removing the transaxle are those lines coming into the transaxle from/to, I believe, the powersteering. Any idea if those connections are pressurized?
Wouldn't want to discover that the hard way.
thank you for your time...

have you removed the fender/seat and degreased the transaxle, then run it to see
if you can see the leak?
sometimes it's just a seal around one of shafts on the side of the transmission.

I have removed the fenders but the left-hand side of the tractor is very difficult to get to. I'd say there's only 2 to 4 inches of clearance between the frame rails and the left hand side of the transaxle. While I blew out the area pretty good, I still cannot discern where the leak is coming from. It drips from the very bottom of the transaxle and if I follow it up, while I'm lying on the ground from the rear of the tractor, it runs up toward the front of the transaxle, behind, then above, the filter. It's conceivable I guess that it's coming from the left hand side but draining down to the lowest point, which happens to be on the right. I just wanted to get the axle out so I can at least see what's going on with the left hand side.
Does that make sense?

i would still try to clean it better, spray some degreaser or use a power washer and clean it
very good then watch for the leak. if you take it apart, you can't run it and it could very
hard to really see where it's coming from.

Great points. I will try that this weekend. Any idea on those hydraulic hoses that connect to the front of the transaxle? That's really my tipping point to letting the dealer handle it (Did I say I can't afford that right now?)
Thank you Dutch...
