John deere 425
I am new to the tractor world, just bought 2.5 acres mostly grass and hilly. Current owner will sell his 2000 425 AWS with tiller, blade, weights, chains and trailer for 5k. Should I look at 530 new instead? THanks!

no

More info would help, like condition and hours, but that combo would be hard to beat.

Also sounds like a pretty good deal to me- as long as you plan to use the attachments.

The JD 400 series are known to be very reliable and hard working, especially with those attachments. If the previous owner properly maintained it and kept it clean, it should still have a lot of life left.

The X530 looks like a mighty fine machine, but that same setup with new attachments will run you about twice as much. How much more is having a 4 year/500 hour warranty worth to you?

I too would vote for the older 425, and I especially like the AWS. The price is good for all the equipment, and if there is something you don't use then it will bring good money on the used market. I started out with a 425 AWS, then upgraded to the X485. Still have it, but went back and picked up another used 425 AWS as I like the 54" mowing deck better than the newer X485's 54C deck.

Also just picked up a 455 AWS with 54" deck. I should decide which of the three to sell, but it won't be the 455. :D

Some pics would be great. Congrats on the new purchase of some acerage.

2000 is past the plastic timing gear problem so that is good. Is the tiller the pto one or the hydraulic one? either way it is worth more than $1000. It would really be nice if it had the 47" snowblower. If it is in good condition that is a fair price. If it was treated rough or it has more than 1000 hours not so much. It also depends where you are because there are regional differences in price. Over all the 425 is one of the best large garden tractors.

Thank you all for the comments. I spoke with the dealer that services it and they relayed that it has been serviced regularly. I am trying to get the hours but the owners husband is not available. I am guessing that it has about 1000 hours. Seems like a better deal than forking over money for a new machine. From what I have gathered if you take care of these things they will go for a long time. I appreciate all of your feedback.

Hi

I personally would look at a 455 Deere with the 22 hp Yanmar Diesel, I have owned both a 425AWS and a 455AWS. I will say that both are a reliable mower, although I would check to see what year this 425 is your looking at is... Early 425's had a plastic cam shaft gear that tended to break or implode without warning. Some have had the plastic cam shaft gear go at 200 hrs and others much higher in hrs.

If it does have the plastic cam gear, I would take the engine apart and replace the cam gear with a metal cam gear that most owners did with their 425's.

Thus said, despite Diesel prices being a bit higher then gas, the Yanmar Diesel in the 455 is much more fuel efficant then the gas Kawaski engine in the 425. I have had both, and theres a differents in fuel economy. If your runing a 48" or 54" deck, the 425 is more suited for those sized decks. I had a 425 with a 60" deck before my 455AWS 60" deck and at times the 425 seemed a bit underpowered for the 60" deck... Granted it will run the 60" deck, but the power is not there if your cutting wet thick grass, with the Diesel this is not an issue, but if you always keep your grass cut short, the 60" deck would be fine,

I would still prefer a 455 Diesel over a 425 though, just my opnion but the 425 would still be a really dependable mower in any case and if the price is right.

I would agree with the diesel over the gas too. I don't thnk the AWS can be beat. To allow larger tires (I guess), the X series AWS had a different steering system which doesn't turn as short as the earlier 4xx's

But being the OP is looking at a year 2000, likely the plastic cam is a non-issue (they were in '97 or thereabouts).

Agreed the 455 is a lot more capable than the 425, but the 425 BDarley is considering already comes with a trailer and all of those attachments- it's the complete package deal that makes it a good buy in my eyes.

BDarley also has a reasonable amount of leverage to negotiate a slightly better price since he already purchased the 2.5 acres from the seller.

That would make sense, if he can get the 425 for a good deal with some attachments, then it would make for a good deal, and he can always upgrade to a 455 later on, if he does not like the 425. They are a good mower reguardless.

As for the AWS turning shorter on the 455AWS vs an X series, I have both a 455AWS and a 2007 X744 AWS with 48" deck. Deere did change the AWS configuration a little on the X series, but if theres a difference in the uncut turning radius, I have not noticed it or is very close to the same turning radius of a 455 AWS.
