My John Deere 430 has a 3 cylinder Yanmar engine. When I turn the key to "ON", I normally see the glow plug light on the dash. Recently, it doesn't display and it seems a bit longer/harder to cold start (as if maybe the glow plugs aren't working??). Battery almost sounds a bit weak as it cranks a bit longer.

I checked the dash light bulb and it is fine and working. Is there some sort of glow plug relay, or do you just replace all of them? Any idea how I diagnose this repair? I'm assuming since the dash light isn't coming on, it is telling me there is a glow plug issue.

thanks!!
:)

Update: I think i figured it out. I was doing a bunch of trouble shooting and discovered my glow plug control module is missing. This is where it should be located. Man, the rattling of these diesels sure does make things go missing. even harder to find in the field I just mowed!!

I was confused because I thought this module might be the same thing.

I can still start my tractor without module. Do I not need it for warmer starting?

I see by the date on this post that I am sure you have fixed that problem already but made me think of what I am going through right now with a 655. I got the tractor a couple mos. ago, free. A friend called and told me that it was in the woods (for 2 yrs) and if I got it I could have it, long story short, I went and it had a busted hyd. line on the bucket but would turn over. I took the battery home and charged it, back the next morning, unpinned the bucket and rolled it off the machine and drove the tractor on the trailer. Anyway, I've been trying to un-do all the short cuts in the wiring and one of them was, instead of replaceing the glo-plug module, they took a push button horn switch, run the hot to the battery, off the other side they run it to the center glow plug. It worked, oh yeah, they took the light switch out so they would have a hole for the horn button.lol I am one that needs things pretty much the way they were so this has really been a interesting project and continues on.Have a great day.

funny...I have a 1962 IH B414 that has been sitting out for a year +. It has broken ignition cylinder. I plan to replace it with an on/off toggle switch, and a "push" type switch for the starter. Theft risk is extremely low, and thief would have a tough time massaging it just right to get it to fire.

I also have hydraulic issues. And I also have to clean carb. Add it to the pile of stuff I need to do.
