Good luck. Maybe the loose parts werent needed.

I'd agree with a loose bolt or broken tooth jamming between gears every so often. When that happens the hydro drive hits huge resistance and jams the pedal up while simultaneously locking all 4 wheels since you run in 4x4.

Like others have said, I'd lift the front end up with the loader and jack the back up. Put in neutral with the engine off and slowly turn all the wheels by hand and listen for any "clunks" that might give a clue as to a broken tooth or worn bearing. If you do have a broken tooth or bearing you could cause more damage running it like that.

Another thing to check is the diff lock. Does it work? You'd have to take it out of 4x4 to notice. Punch the steering brakes one at a time with the diff lock engaged and see if both tires stop like they should. I bought mine broken and had to fish the pieces out of the sump to make sure they didn't wedge between the gears until I can take it apart to fix.

Just to keep you guys updated, I checked the tire sizes this weekend and they are the correct matching sizes for my tractor. So, the mystery still continues. I am going to bet it was whatever got ground up in the tranny and damaged the sump screen. I gave it another good workout grappling brush from an area I was clearing and it ran without any issues.

Six Years later and I have found this thread incredibly helpful! I wanted to share my Jd4300 story.

I have experienced exactly the same symptoms, tractor sat as a yard ornament for 2 weeks while I researched and looked at tech diagrams of potential gears replacements. I had a friend stop by yesterday and asked simply 'are the fluids topped up?'. My response of 'sure...' was accommodating but perturbed because I was thinking that although important the issue that I experienced was a HARD STOP... it had to be mechanical. My friend began checking the fluids in the front axle and there was no fluid on the stick. Humoring him we began to add fluid - it took as much as 3.5 qts (shame on me as I believe the system holds 4.5qts); again humoring him we cranked it up and tried to move... while it was out of 4wheel drive, the front wheels still did not want to move - I could literally push them along without either one moving. For giggles, I put it into 4 wheel drive and she worked! I went slow (moved 2 to 3 feet) in forward then reverse before going for a jaunt up the driveway and back. Amazed, I parked it directly in front of the garage where I could actually work on it - this because I am not convinced that severely low fluids was the problem.

I am going to run through some suggestions in this thread to assure that there is nothing more severe going on here.

If you were 3 quarts low in the front axle and kept running it my bet is you have some bad bearings and/or damaged gears in the front axle. Jack it up and spin things back and forth by hand, a mechanics stethoscope helps to isolate where noises are coming from.
